He's allowed just one run with 21:7 K:BB over his last 15 appearances spanning 16 innings, filling an eighth-inning role that was supposed to be handled by Josh Taylor (shoulder) and/or Darwinzon Hernandez (shoulder).

Brasier (1-0) allowed one hit and struck out one over 1.1 innings to earn the win Saturday versus the Nationals.

Manager Ron Roenicke said Brasier would serve as the Red Sox's opening pitcher in Monday's game against the Rays, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.

Brasier hasn't covered more than an inning in any of his five appearances out of the bullpen this season, so unless he works efficiently in the first frame, expect him to bow out of the game in the bottom of the second. According to Koch, Roenicke suggested a day earlier that Colten Brewer will likely cover the bulk of the innings once Brasier exits the game.

During a season in which there have been plenty of opportunities for Boston's relievers, this was just Brasier's second appearance. It looks like Brasier, who served as an important setup man in 2018 and closed games in 2019, is no longer a trusted member of the bullpen.

Brasier is on the bubble, competing with several relievers for the final few bullpen spots, but he has thrown this spring like the pitcher that surprised Boston in 2018. He's allowed three hits and one run while striking out four without a walk over five spring innings. "Certainly our goal and his goal is to get back to the guy he was in 2018, because he was very, very good that year and really important," Red Sox pitching coach Dave Bush told Ian Browne of MLB.com. "It's not to discount the year he had last year, but he wasn't quite himself most of the year." He was an important setup piece for the Red Sox in 2018, when they won the World Series, but a toe injury in 2019 led to kinks in his mechanics.

Brasier (2-4) was charged with six runs on five hits and a walk over two-thirds of an inning, taking the loss in Saturday's 10-4 loss to the Angels.

Brasier entered the contest in the eighth inning with a 4-3 lead, but the Angels opened the inning with three consecutive singles. Brasier left with two men on base, and his replacement, Josh Smith, allowed a three-run home run to tack on some more damage to Brasier's line. The right-hander had allowed only one run over his previous seven innings entering Saturday's contest. He now has a 5.06 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 49:18 K:BB in 48 innings this season.

Brasier was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket ahead of Saturday's contest against the Orioles.

The promotion comes after Chris Sale (elbow) was placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Aug. 14. Brasier was 2-0 with a 0.96 ERA and 13 strikeouts across 9.1 innings in the minors since he was sent down July 16. The right-hander will return to a Red Sox bullpen that has struggled in his absence.

Brasier was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Brasier hasn't been able to get the job done for the Red Sox this season out of the bullpen, accruing a 4.24 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with 36 punchouts over 40.1 innings. He's also blown three save opportunities over that stretch. Darwinzon Hernandez was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Brasier struck out one in a scoreless inning to record his seventh save in a 2-0 win over the Twins on Monday.
