Suarez earned a hold Tuesday against the Cubs, allowing one hit and striking out two in one scoreless inning.
EDGE Analysis
Suarez came on in the seventh inning with the Padres up by two runs. He gave up a two-out single but otherwise had no problem getting through the frame. The right-hander entered the season as the Padres' projected closer before the team traded for Taylor Rogers. Suarez had a rough first outing, giving up three earned runs without notching an out, but since then he has posted a 1.80 ERA, 0.73 WHIP and 17:4 K:BB across 15 innings.

Suarez (0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief Thursday against Arizona after allowing three runs on zero hits, two walks and a hit-by-pitch without recording an out.
EDGE Analysis
Suarez's command was all over the place, as he tossed just four of his 15 pitches for strikes. The 31-year-old right-hander was making his MLB debut after emerging as a closer in Japan the last two years, but the Padres' addition of Taylor Rogers likely relegates Suarez to a setup or middle-relief role to begin the season.

Suarez appears to be the favorite to close games for the Padres this season, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Suarez signed with the Padres in November following a five-season stint in Japan, and he has been excellent in Cactus League play, allowing only one run while posting a 7:0 K:BB across four innings. The 31-year-old hasn't yet logged a save this spring but racked up 67 saves during his final two campaigns in Japan. Emilio Pagan could still be in the running for San Diego's closer job as well, but he hasn't been as sharp in Cactus League action, allowing five runs in 4.1 frames.

Suarez and Emilio Pagan look like the readiest options at closer for the Padres, speculates Dennis Lin of The Athletic.
EDGE Analysis
This doesn't seem to be tied to any firm reporting, just Lin's expertise from being around the team this spring. Suarez, 31, emerged as one of the top closers in Japan over the last two years and got a $5 million deal with the Padres this winter.
