The Pirates intend to use Scahill as a multi-inning pitcher. "Rob pitched multiple innings three or four times," manager Clint Hurdle said in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "His stuff and command of his pitches were consistent. We need another multi-inning guy we can depend upon." Scahill has improved his changeup to help retire left-handed batters. "That's a huge difference," Scahill said. "I thought the changeup could be a real weapon for me against left-handers. I've always had it, but I was hesitant to throw it. This year, I used it early and often." Lefties hold a career slash line of .333/.413/.510 against the former Colorado reliever.

Scahill was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday, MLB.com's Tom Singer reports. Scahill had been sent down less than a week ago, but he'll be recalled to provide bullpen depth at the Major League level. The Bucs' pen would have to be strapped for extra arms if the right-hander pitches highly meaningful innings any time soon.

Scahill was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday. Scahill was never a good bet to make the Opening Day roster, and while he doesn't offer much in terms of upside, it still wouldn't be surprising to see him pitch in the majors this season. If and when he arrives, he'll likely be used in low-leverage situations.

Scahill has allowed two earned runs in 5.2 spring innings. impressing numerous scouts with his performance, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. While he's not expected to make the Opening Day roster with Pittsburgh, Scahill could serve as trade bait for another team. He's thrown three straight scoreless outings in the Grapefruit League.

The Rockies traded Scahill to the Pirates on Tuesday in exchange for Shane Carle. Scahill struggled in 12 appearances with the Rockies in 2014, posting a 4.80 ERA and 1.73 WHIP over 15 innings, and he wasn't much better at Triple-A Colorado Springs (4.32 ERA, 1.32 WHIP). The right-hander has averaged a strikeout per inning in three seasons at the Triple-A level and the Pirates have a way of working magic with pitchers, but it's hard to imagine Scahill separating from the front end of the bullpen in 2015.

Scahill was designated for assignment by the Rockies on Monday. The team needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster, as Scahill was outrighted in favor of another right-handed reliever, Jorge Rondon, whom they claimed off waivers from St. Louis.

Scahill was recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Tuesday, MLB.com's Cody Ulm reports. It's the third stint with the big club this season for Scahill, who tossed a scoreless inning in Tuesday's loss to the Giants. He's been merely adequate in his 33 appearances for Colorado Springs with a 4.47 ERA across 48.1 frames, which will likely prevent him from assuming high-leverage work with the Rockies in September.
