EDGE Analysis

Rasmussen was designated for assignment Monday.
EDGE Analysis
With the signing of Steve Cishek, the Mariners needed to make room on the 40-man roster and Rasmussen was the casualty. He struggled mightily in limited time in the big leagues last season, working to a 9.98 ERA in 15.1 innings but had success in the minors, so he could find himself back with the parent club at some point.

Rasmussen was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo after Friday's game, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. The 26-year-old made his 2015 debut in a blowout win over the Rangers on Friday, allowing one hit and striking out one in a scoreless frame. He was swapped out after the game for Matt Boyd, who is expected to start Saturday for Toronto. Rasmussen will have to bide his time and await another opportunity with the big club.

The 26-year-old Rasmussen has struggled with control throughout his professional career, and his only big-league work came last season when he allowed four earned runs over 11.1 innings. He'll likely get most of his work in low or medium-leverage situations.

Rasmussen was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo on Friday, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports. Rasmussen only spent one day with Toronto on his most recent stint in the majors. He's been in limbo between Toronto and Buffalo for the better part of the past month with his most recent trip back to Buffalo caused by Steve Tolleson's return from the paternity list.

Rasmussen was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Thursday, Mike Wilner of Sportsnet.ca reports. With Brett Lawrie (oblique) hitting the DL, Rasmussen will return to provide the team with some added bullpen depth ahead of Thursday's finale against Baltimore. The left-hander has allowed just four runs while fanning 13 in 11.1 innings with the big club this season, but the team will need to make room for Steve Tolleson (paternity) on Friday, so he may end up heading right back down.
