The Giants placed Mark Melancon (elbow) on the disabled list, so they needed another live arm to open the season. Moronta has a huge fastball but often doesn't know where it's going. He has the potential to someday develop into a late-inning arm, but will be limited to low-leverage situations initially.

Moronta made his first appearance in the Show at the latter end of the 2017 season. He threw 6.2 innings across seven games, over which he recorded 11 strikeouts and allowed two runs on six hits and three walks. Although he's returning to the Triple-A level, it's entirely possible that he'll return to the big club this season if the Giants need help in the bullpen.

Moronta gave up a hit while striking out three over a scoreless inning Tuesday against the Diamondbacks.

Moronta isn't being used in high-leverage situations, but he may have shown enough this September to earn a bullpen job with the Giants next season.
