Reid Brignac is expected to win a utility job with the Rockies. Brignac, who was acquired from the Rays last month, batted .310 with one homer this spring. Long gone are the days when he was a top prospect, but he's a good defender and is a worthy bench player.

Reid Brignac had a huge day at the plate Friday, going 3-for-3 with a home run and four RBI in a 14-9 win over the Rangers. Brignac delivered a pair of RBI singles and a two-run homer. He entered Friday's action with just three hits in 18 at-bats this spring. That he's out of options will help his case of making the Opening Day roster, but the Rockies could still decide to go in another direction with their bench.

Rockies acquired SS Reid Brignac from the Rays. Brignac was designated for assignment by Tampa Bay last week. The 27-year-old owns a weak .586 career OPS, but he's a good defender and can play multiple positions. He'll serve as insurance this season behind Troy Tulowitzki.

The Padres have reportedly expressed interest in Reid Brignac. Brignac has also been linked to the Twins and Astros after being designated for assignment earlier this week. The former top prospect owns a weak .227/.268/.317 career batting line in five major league seasons, but should resurface with another team as a utility infielder.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman hears that the Twins and Astros could have interest in Reid Brignac. Brignac was designated for assignment by the Rays Tuesday but could be traded elsewhere soon. The former top prospect is versatile and has a pretty good glove but is a career .227/.268/.317 and hasn't hit much the last few years in the minors, either.

Rays designated SS Reid Brignac for assignment. The Rays will hope to find a trade partner for Brignac, who has a good and versatile glove but owns a weak .227/.268/.317 career batting line in five major league seasons. He was out of minor league options.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times hears that there was "some chatter" last week about a possible Reid Brignac trade. Brignac is out of options and doesn't look like a fit on the Rays' Opening Day roster, so he could either be dealt or be exposed to waivers. The former top prospect has batted just .227/.268/.317 over parts of five seasons with the Rays and turned 27 last month.

Rays optioned INF Reid Brignac to Triple-A Durham. The move clears the way for the newly-claimed Brandon Allen on the active roster. Brignac went just 2-for-17 (.118) over his first eight games this season. Sean Rodriguez should continue to get the lion's share of starts at shortstop while Eliot Johnson will serve as his backup.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times speculates that Reid Brignac and Stephen Vogt will likely be sent to Triple-A Durham on Friday. Brandon Allen was claimed off waivers from the A's on Thursday and B.J. Upton (back) is expected to return from the disabled list Friday, so the Rays need to make a pair of moves. Brignac is just 2-for-17 (.118) so far this season while Vogt is hitless in 13 at-bats.

Reid Brignac went 2-for-2 with a double and and an RBI as the Rays beat the Twins 6-2 on Tuesday. Brignac, who missed time with a foot injury last month, is hitting .333 with 30 at-bats for the spring. He figures to be the Rays' primary shortstop until B.J. Upton returns, at which point Ben Zobrist will move back to second base. The Rays will then have to decide whether they prefer Brignac or Sean Rodriguez at shortstop going forward.
