Randy Wells wants to attempt a comeback this season. Wells, 31, announced his retirement less than a year ago, but he's getting the itch to pitch again after his right elbow responded well to throwing sessions this winter. The right-hander underwent arthroscopic surgery on the elbow in July of 2012 and then retired in April of 2013 after posting a 6.08 ERA over five Triple-A starts for the Rangers. "It's far-fetched because when you retire, you get off people's radar," Wells said. "We'll see what happens."

Randy Wells took his spot Wednesday but struggled, allowing three runs on five hits and four walks over just 3 2/3 innings. ''We'll weigh our options,'' Sveum said. ''You've got other people. The [ Chris ] Volstads , the [ Chris ] Rusins are down there [in the minors]. We'll weigh our options and see where we're at.'' Volstad holds a 4.78 ERA and 1.51 WHIP since being demoted to Triple-A, but Rusin has been underwhelming, as well, with marks of 4.56 and 1.34, respectively. The Cubs were idle Thursday, so they might just skip the spot the next time through.

Wells is likely in line for one or two more starts in place of the Cubs ace, but he can be safely ignored in all but the deepest of NL-only leagues.
