Liz hasn't seemed to earn the team's trust in tight situations, either, and isn't currently in line for potential save opportunities.

Liz scattered two hits and three walks through three innings of scoreless relief against the Cubs on Tuesday. Only 28 of Liz's 54 pitches went for strikes, but the righthander offered just enough control to give the Bucs an acceptable showing. The three innings represent Liz's longest major-league outing since Sept. 24, 2007, back when he was a rookie with the Orioles.

Liz will open the 2015 campaign as part of Pittsburgh's bullpen, Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. Liz has endured a long journey since last pitching in the major leagues for Baltimore in 2009. The former top prospect isn't expected to pitch in high leverage situations for the Pirates, but he could pick up an occasional hold. The hard-throwing righty compiled a 1.80 ERA in 15 spring innings, but struggled with his command (5:7 K:BB ratio).
