Higgins will remain with the Reds for the upcoming 2025 campaign after slashing .259/.319/.384 with 11 home runs, 70 RBI and 50 runs scored over 135 games a year ago at Triple-A Louisville. He'll presumably begin the year at Triple-A following a breakout season for Tyler Stephenson at the big-league level in 2024, though he could be in line for a promotion if either Stephenson or Jose Trevino fail to stay healthy.

The deal includes an invitation to major-league spring training. The 30-year-old had a .639 OPS in 83 games for the Cubs from 2021 through 2022 but spent all of 2023 at the Triple-A level between the Diamondbacks and Cubs organizations, posting an .857 OPS with 11 home runs. The Reds already appear set at catcher with Tyler Stephenson and Luke Maile, so Higgins will likely begin the 2024 season at Triple-A Louisville.

The Cubs acquired Higgins from the Diamondbacks on Sunday in exchange for cash considerations, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports.
EDGE Analysis
Higgins was having a nice season at Triple-A Reno, slashing .316/.407/.471 through 58 games, but clearly Arizona did not have plans for him at the major-league level. Now back with the team that drafted him in 2015, Higgins could get another opportunity with the Cubs down the road if there is an injury or if the team trades a catcher or two.

Higgins joined Arizona as a non-roster invitee in January and was unable to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster despite a .913 OPS during spring training. Jose Herrera is poised to begin the season as the backup catcher behind starter Gabriel Moreno, but Higgins could still find himself in the mix at some point with Carson Kelly out with a fractured forearm.

Higgins was designated for assignment by the Cubs in late December and elected free agency Monday after clearing waivers. He was able to find a new team shortly after and will serve as a non-roster invitee during spring training in 2023. The 29-year-old appeared in 74 games for the Cubs last year and slashed .229/.310/.383 with six home runs, 30 RBI and 23 runs.

A 12th-round draft pick of the Cubs in 2015, Higgins reached the majors for the first time in 2021 and appeared in 83 total games with the big club the past two seasons. Over 254 career plate appearances, the 29-year-old has slashed .210/.291/.348 with six home runs and 30 RBI.

Higgins came into the night batting just .190 this month across 21 at-bats, but he managed to have a productive game from the No. 7 spot in the order. The 29-year-old has been seeing time at first base, where he played Wednesday, as well as catcher with Willson Contreras (ankle) out. Despite the clearer path to playing time, Higgins still doesn't offer a ton of fantasy upside as a career .203 hitter.
