Moylan retired the only batter he faced Sunday in Minnesota to notch his team-leading 18th hold of the season.

A few implosions early in the year continue to vandalize Moylan's ERA (4.04), but the 11-year veteran has actually put together one of his finest campaigns. Since May 24, opponents have slashed just .130/.213/.217 against Moylan, and his .190 wOBA is tops among AL relievers during that stretch.

The side-winder set down the Cardinals in order during a quick seventh inning. He exited in the eight frame after allowing a leadoff single to Yadier Molina, who later scored on a two-run homer given up by Ryan Buchter. Moylan's streak spanned 16.2 innings and dated back to June 27. Molina's run was just the third Moylan's allowed in his last 33 games, a span in which he's posted a 1.07 ERA while limiting opponents to a .126 BAA. The veteran's 14 holds are one shy of the team lead, while his 54 games are most among all Royals pitchers.

Moylan pitched a clean ninth inning in Saturday's extra-inning loss to the Dodgers.

EDGE Analysis

The 38-year-old veteran's ERA (5.28) continues to be scarred by a handful of atrocious outings earlier in the season, but he hasn't been nearly as bad as what's seen on the surface. His ERA has been steadily deflating for nearly two months, and Moylan owns a beautiful 1.15 ERA with 18 strikeouts over his last 20 appearances. Furthermore, he's converted all 11 of his hold chances this year, tying him with setup man Joakim Soria for most on the team.

Moylan picked up his ninth hold Wednesday in San Francisco.

EDGE Analysis

After logging six holds in 11 May games, it took seven appearances this month for Moylan to pick up his first of June. The decade-long veteran has allowed just one run over his last nine contests while managing an 8:1 K:BB in seven innings. Moylan's nine holds this year are second only to a career-high 21 as a Brave in 2010.

Moylan struck out the only two batters he faced Tuesday against the Tigers en route to his eighth save of the season.

EDGE Analysis

As Rustin Dodd of The Kansas City Star pointed out, Moylan's horrid 7.85 ERA and 1.53 WHIP are no indication of the reliever's success this season. In 22 of his 25 appearances, Moylan's worked his way to a 1.13 ERA (two runs over 16 innings); however, the veteran's other three outings (14 runs over 2.1 innings) combined for an unbelievable 96.57 ERA. Obviously a few implosions have disfigured the 38-year-old's surface stats, but his underlying effectiveness is strong. As May comes to a close, Moylan's eight holds rank in the AL's top-10, and he's on pace to tie a career high with 25 holds this season.

Moylan's five holds are best among Royals relievers and the mark sits just two shy of his entire total from a year ago. His 7.24 ERA is not indicative of the 38-year-old's efforts in 2017. Moylan has not allowed a run in 16 of 19 appearances this season -- including a stretch of 10 games to open the campaign. However, his numbers were trashed by two disastrous outings in which he allowed a combined 10 runs over 1.1 innings. Overall, the veteran appears to offer some unexpected value in leagues that reward holds.

Moylan owns a 5.06 ERA and 1.31 WHIP with 10 strikeouts and three holds through 15 appearances (10.2 innings) this season.

EDGE Analysis

Moylan's ERA is hugely skewed due to an April 24 implosion against the White Sox when he allowed five runs on five hits while recording just one out. Outside of that disaster, the 38-year-old right-hander has given up just one run over 14 contests. He'll continue to be deployed in often, and could provide decent value -- if the Royals start winning some more games -- in formats that reward holds.
