Dunshee signed a minor-league contract with the Nationals on Tuesday.

Dunshee reached the majors for the first time in 2024, making one long-relief appearance for Atlanta in August before being quickly cast off the 40-man roster. After electing free agency in November, Dunshee caught on with Mexican League club Toros de Tijuana, but he was released last week so that he could pursue opportunities in affiliated ball. The 30-year-old righty ultimately caught on with the Nationals and will serve as organization pitching depth at the Triple-A level.

The club needed to free up a spot on its 40-man roster for the return of Michael Harris (hamstring) from the 60-day injured list, and Dunshee ended up being the casualty. Dunshee made his major-league debut last week, allowing five runs in a 2.1-inning relief appearance against the Brewers.

After nearly three months with the rib issue, Dunshee returned to action for Triple-A Las Vegas in September, making five appearances while giving up 18 runs (14 earned) and striking out 12 over 17 innings. The 27-year-old doesn't possess a spot on the 40-man roster, but he could get a token chance to compete for the Athletics' No. 5 spot in the Opening Day rotation once big-league spring training opens.

Dunshee had Thoracic Outlet surgery in June, Mark Chiarelli of Baseball America reports.

The 26-year-old righty posted a 6.15 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 26:14 K:BB in 26.1 innings through five starts with Triple-A Las Vegas prior to needing the surgery. He will miss the rest of the season.
