Allen agreed to a one-year, $1.4 million contract with the Astros on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Atlanta claimed Ha-Seong Kim (back) off waivers from the Rays on Monday, and he's expected to take over as the team's starting shortstop once he's activated from the IL, which could happen as soon as Tuesday. Allen will likely be relegated to a late-inning defensive role after Kim joins the active roster.

Allen is not in the lineup for Thursday's game in Philadelphia.

In addition to batting just .227 on the season, Allen has been a non-factor in most of the counting categories, contributing zero home runs, six stolen bases, 25 runs and 18 RBI over 95 games. The 26-year-old probably profiles best as a utility infielder, but his excellent defense at shortstop along with the lack of appealing alternatives within the organization should be enough to keep him atop the depth chart in Atlanta.
