Arizona's primary backup at short is Josh Rojas, who is expected to hit the injured list with a fractured left pinky finger. That leaves the Diamondbacks without a true backup. Per Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, manager Torey Lovullo named Andrew Young and Eduardo Escobar as Ahmed's backups, but neither has much recent experience there. Scouts don't regard Young has an average defender at second base, let alone shortstop, and Escobar has played just two innings there since joining the Diamondbacks three years ago. At any rate, it may not matter if Ahmed continues to hit. Since returning from the All-Star break, he's batting .409 with a .980 OPS over seven games.

Ahmed went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and a stolen base in Wednesday's 6-4 win over Pittsburgh.

Josh VanMeter will pick up a start in the infield of place of Ahmed, who started in all three games of the Diamondbacks' weekend series versus the Cubs while going a collective 3-for-10 at the plate. The 27-68 Diamondbacks are expected to sell off multiple veterans ahead of the July 30 deadline, but since Ahmed's four-year, $32.5 million deal won't expire until after the 2023 season, he's more likely than Eduardo Escobar, David Peralta or Kole Calhoun to stay put in Arizona.
