Abel will stay at Triple-A St. Paul after he was traded from the Rays as the Twins want him to continue to work on tweaking his pitches, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
Abel was one of Philadelphia's top prospects and was part of the return for closer Jhoan Duran. The Twins don't appear in a rush to bring him to the majors though the team has an opening for the fifth starter role, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him in the majors again this season. The right-hander made six starts for the Phillies this year in his first taste of the majors and has a 5.04 ERA over 25 innings, but he's been dominant at the Triple-A level with a 2.31 ERA and 9.9 K/9 in 13 starts

Abel and Eduardo Tait were acquired by the Twins from the Phillies on Wednesday in exchange for Jhoan Duran, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Abel was one of Philadelphia's top prospects and is now a key piece of the biggest trade deadline deal of 2025 so far. The right-hander has made six starts for the Phillies this year in his first taste of the majors and has a 5.04 ERA over 25 innings, but he's been dominant at the Triple-A level with a 2.31 ERA and 9.9 K/9 in 13 starts. Abel will have a clearer path the big-league rotation in Minnesota given the club's injury situation and since Chris Paddack has also already been traded.

The Phillies optioned Abel to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Friday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
Abel surrendered five runs over 1.2 frames during the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Padres and posted a 6.63 ERA over 19 innings since entering Philadelphia's rotation in early June. The Phillies could fill their open rotation spot with a bullpen game next week.

Abel (2-2) took the loss in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Padres, coughing up five runs on two hits and five walks over 1.2 innings as the Phillies fell 6-4. He struck out three.
EDGE Analysis
The rookie right-hander couldn't find the plate, tossing just 25 of 53 pitches for strikes before getting the hook and putting his bullpen behind the eight ball in the twin bill. Abel hadn't pitched since June 21 as a rain delay washed out his previous start, and the long layoff almost certainly contributed to his lack of sharpness. His ERA spiked from 3.47 to 5.04 as a result of this outing, and Abel will try to get back on track in his next trip to the mound, which is scheduled to come on the road early next week in San Francisco.

Abel didn't throw a pitch in Friday's 13-0 rout of Atlanta due to a two-hour, 19-minute rain delay.
EDGE Analysis
Both scheduled starting pitchers had already warmed up before the umpiring crew signaled for the delay, but Philly elected not to send Abel to the mound when play finally began and went with a bullpen game instead, while Altanta stuck with Bryce Elder. It's not clear yet if Abel will have his turn skipped completely, or if the Phillies will use the hiccup to shuffle their rotation.

Abel (2-1) took the loss against the Mets on Saturday, allowing four runs on six hits and no walks with one strikeout over three innings.
EDGE Analysis
Abel allowed a solo home run in the first inning and then served up back-to-back-to-back long balls to the top three hitters in the Mets' order in the third. It marked the worst of the rookie's five starts with the Phillies, and he's now totaled just nine strikeouts over his past four outings after fanning nine in his major-league debut on May 18. He'll carry a 3.47 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 18:4 K:BB across 23.1 innings into a road matchup with Atlanta next weekend.

Abel (2-0) picked up the win Monday at Miami, allowing one run on three hits and one walk over five innings. He struck out three.
EDGE Analysis
The rookie right-hander had no issues limiting a subpar Marlins offense, completing his five frames in a tidy 77 pitches, 50 of which were strikes. The only blemish on Abel's line came via a Connor Norby single in the second inning. Through his first 20.1 innings, Abel now sports a 2.21 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 17:4 K:BB. His 1.8 BB/9 in the majors so far is especially impressive given that he has pitched at 4.1 BB/9 in 57 innings at Triple-A this season. The 23-year-old lines up to make his next start at home against the Mets this weekend.

Abel allowed three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three in four innings Tuesday against the Cubs. He did not factor into the decision.
EDGE Analysis
Abel showcased some shaky command Tuesday after two strong starts to begin his major-league career. He gave up solo home runs to Dansby Swanson, Ian Happ and Michael Busch -- all on pitches left up in the zone. Abel finished his day on a strong note, however, by striking out Kyle Tucker with the bases loaded and a full count. The team announced Tuesday that Aaron Nola (ribs) could be out through the All-Star break, so Abel should be able to stick around through the summer as long as he doesn't completely implode. He's currently lined up to face the Marlins on the road next week.

Abel didn't factor into the decision Wednesday against the Blue Jays after giving up one run on three hits and no walks in 5.1 innings. He struck out two.
EDGE Analysis
Although Abel wasn't nearly as dominant as he was in his first start, when he fanned nine in six shutout innings, he was still highly effective. The rookie right-hander did generate just five whiffs, but he's now surrendered only one run while producing a promising 11:0 K:BB over the first 11.1 innings of his major-league career. With Aaron Nola (ankle) still yet to go on a minor-league rehab assignment, Abel's next turn in Philadelphia's rotation is tentatively slated for early next week against a Pirates club with a miserable .638 OPS over 31 games since the start of May.

The Phillies recalled Abel from Triple-A Lehigh Valley ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday in Toronto.
EDGE Analysis
Zack Wheeler (personal) was placed on the paternity list in a corresponding move, but Abel will be taking over the rotation spot that had previously been occupied by Taijuan Walker, who has been moved to a relief role. Walker had been filling in for Aaron Nola (ankle), who has resumed throwing off a mound and should eventually take the rotation spot back from Abel once he's activated from the 15-day injured list. Nola will likely need to make a rehab start in the minors before being reinstated, so Abel should be in good position to get at least two turns through the rotation while he's up with the big club. The 23-year-old righty was highly impressive in his MLB debut back on May 18 against the Pirates, covering six shutout innings and scattering five hits while striking out nine batters.
