Mesa was promoted from Double-A New Hampshire to Triple-A Buffalo on Friday, John Lott of the National Post reports. Mesa hit for a .413/.449/.630 slash line in 12 games for Double-A New Hampshire and has produced at many levels of the minors for stretches but has never seemed to be able to put it all together. With a crowded outfield for the Blue Jays, Mesa likely won't crack the major league roster barring a barrage of injuries, but he has hit .400 (6-for-16) across eight MLB games in his career.

Blue Jays acquired OF Melky Mesa from the Royals for cash considerations; assigned him to Triple-A Buffalo. Mesa had a promising .284/.346/.527 batting line with five home runs and 10 RBI through 23 games this season at Triple-A Omaha. The 27-year-old outfielder will function as organizational depth now for the Jays.

Melky Mesa hit a grand slam off Mike Zagurski of the Pirates in Sunday's win. Mesa, a native of the Dominican Republic, backed out of the World Baseball Classic earlier this month in order to help his chances of making the Yankees. He still has a shot of being carried as a reserve, but it's not a very good one. To go along with his three homers this spring, he has a .183 average and 13 strikeouts in 43 at-bats.

Melky Mesa went 2-for-3 and hit a three-run homer off the Astros' Sam Demel on Thursday. Mesa is now competing for a spot on the Yankees with Curtis Granderson down. He's also battling to be the Dominican Rebublic's left fielder in the World Baseball Classic. The 26-year-old hit .264/.325/.480 between Double- and Triple-A last year.
