Royals signed C Max Ramirez to a minor league contract. Ramirez had been released by the Reds last week. The 29-year-old spent 2012-13 at Triple-A Omaha for the Royals and is now headed back there.

He's batted just .229/.267/.339 over 118 at-bats this season and, and although he'll given the Giants some much-needed catching depth in the minors, there's no guarantee he'd be an offensive upgrade over Eli Whiteside and Chris Stewart.
