Olson's surgery Friday was to repair a broken hamate bone, Andrew Simon of MLB.com reports. While there's no official timetable for his return, typically those injuries require 6-to-8 weeks off before the player can resume normal activity.
EDGE Analysis
Often hitters struggle to hit for power even after returning from these procedures, and in many other instances, there are setbacks in the recovery process. With such a long period of inactivity, Olson almost certainly is going to need a lengthy recovery period and subsequent rehab assignment.

Olson underwent successful surgery on his right hand Friday, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
EDGE Analysis
Olson injured his hand during the team's opening series against the Mariners. The A's have yet to provide a timetable for Olson's return, though he figures to open the season on the IL, likely opening up an avenue to playing time for either Mark Canha or Chad Pinder.

Olson left Thursday's 5-4 loss to the Mariners in the sixth inning with right hand pain, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports. He went 1-for-2 with a run scored before departing.
EDGE Analysis
The Athletics aren't likely to provide an update on the severity of Olson's injury until he's re-evaluated in California when the team arrives back from Japan. According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, Olson experienced the pain in his hand after fouling off a pitch and had difficulty gripping the bat, which suggests his injury may be more than a day-to-day concern. If Olson is forced to miss time, Mark Canha or Chad Pinder could be in line for more action at first base.

Olson is one of the primary candidates for the No. 3 spot in the batting order during the regular season, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. "I'm fine with anywhere, but I'm pretty comfortable in the third spot," Olson said before going 0-for-2 with a walk in the A's 11-2 loss to Milwaukee. "Growing up, that's where I hit, and even in the minors I was there a lot with Renato Nunez hitting behind me. It should be nice to have KD [Khris Davis] behind me and maybe get more pitches to hit."
EDGE Analysis
Jed Lowrie saw an appreciable boost in production while logging 653 plate appearances out of the No. 3 hole last season, slashing .275/.361/.461 with 59 extra-base hits (35 doubles, one triple, 23 home runs) and 96 RBI in that slot alone. With Lowrie now a Met, Olson is a fitting candidate to slide into that spot after making just 17 plate appearances there in 2018. The 24-year-old racked up 84 RBI last season while hitting behind Davis in the lineup, but as he noted, Davis often did a good job clearing the bases ahead of Olson while driving in a career-high 123 runs. Manager Bob Melvin will likely continue to evaluate different scenarios ahead of the team's season opener March 20 in Japan versus the Mariners, and Slusser also notes that Stephen Piscotty, who's hit third for most of spring, would likely see his fair share of time there over the course of the season as well, especially versus right-handed starters.

Olson went 1-for-5 with a grand slam Wednesday in the Athletics' 9-3 win over the Mariners.
EDGE Analysis
Olson's bases-clearing drive off reliever Chasen Bradford concluded a six-run fifth inning for the Athletics, who kept their hopes of earning home-field advantage for the wild-card matchup with the Yankees alive with the victory. Though he has seen his OPS fall more than 200 points from his impressive rookie campaign, Olson is coming on strong in September with a .295/.396/.526 slash line, five home runs and 19 RBI in 23 games.

Olson went 3-for-4 with a solo home run in Oakland's 5-1 loss to the Twins on Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
It was a quiet day for the Oakland offense against Minnesota starter Kyle Gibson, but Olson managed to account for his team's only run with this second-inning solo shot. He's having a terrific season at the plate for the Athletics, with a .786 OPS, 28 homers and 32 doubles through 560 at-bats.

Olson went 1-for-2 with an RBI single, three walks and two runs in a win over the Angels on Thursday.
EDGE Analysis
Several of his teammates did it in more spectacular fashion, but Olson had his fair share of contributions in the Athletics' jaw-dropping 21-run outburst. The multiple walks were a rarity for Olson, who'd last accomplished the feat on Aug. 3 and had only done it on eight occasions overall. Olson's on-base percentage for September is up to a whopping .406 following Thursday's performance, as he's also reached safely in eight straight games.

Olson went 2-for-3 with a walk in a loss to the Rays on Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
Olson continued to swing a hot bat through the entirety of the three-game set, and he's now hit safely in five straight games overall. That stretch now includes back-to-back two-hit efforts, and his consistency at the plate throughout the month has helped lead to an impressive .311 September average.

Olson went 2-for-4 with a double and a run in a win over the Rangers on Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
Olson followed up Saturday's solo home run with his first multi-hit effort of September, extending his modest hitting streak to four games in the process. The young slugger has already driven in and scored four runs apiece over the first eight games of the month, and he's slashing .253/.323/.453 across 189 post-All-Star-break plate appearances while modestly improving his strikeout rate to 22.8 percent from a 25.2 percent first-half figure.
