Manning will be able to make a start or two for Erie before the end of the Double-A season and should open 2019 at the same level, pushing for a promotion to Triple-A sometime next year.

Manning worked a career-high seven scoreless innings for Low-A West Michigan in its 8-0 win over Dayton on Sunday. He gave up three hits and a walk and struck out six.

EDGE Analysis

Manning commanded and controlled his fastball effectively against both left- and right-handed hitters Sunday in what may have been the finest outing of his young career. The 20-year-old righty lowered his ERA to 3.70 and has generated 68 punchouts over 48.2 innings in his first taste of full-season ball. He'll likely be in store for a promotion to High-A Lakeland within the next few weeks.

Manning struck out nine over six scoreless innings Tuesday for Low-A West Michigan. He scattered three hits and one walk in the start.

It was the best of the right-hander's six starts this season, with Manning pounding the zone for 58 strikes on 87 pitches and whiffing the side in the second inning. Perhaps more significantly, Manning walked just one batter for the second time in three starts, an encouraging sign after he issued 12 free passes in his first three outings of the season. If the 20-year-old continues to curb the walks in his subsequent starts, he'll likely earn a promotion to High-A Lakeland at some point this summer.

Manning (oblique) was activated from the minor-league disabled list Wednesday, Emily Waldon of The Athletic Detroit reports.
