Carpenter is out of the lineup for the second straight game Sunday against the Pirates.

Carpenter didn't get the starting nod Saturday either, but his absence Sunday is most likely due to the fact that the Pirates are sending another left-handed pitcher to the mound in Jon Niese. The infielder did suffer a jammed finger earlier in the week, so it makes sense to give Carpenter an extra day of rest, especially now that the infield has gotten deeper due to the return of Jhonny Peralta. In the meantime, Jedd Gyorko will get the starting nod at second base for the second day in a row.

Carpenter was removed from Thursday's game late due to a jammed finger but did return to the lineup Friday and homered and there is no indication the finger is behind his absence Saturday. It's likely the case of facing southpaw Francisco Liriano, as Jedd Gyorko will replace him at second base and bat eighth for the Cardinals. The Pirates send another lefty to the mound Sunday, so it's possible he will receive back-to-back days off.

Carpenter's bat has been on fire since late May, as he's reached safely in nine of his last 10 games. He's also slashing .367/.486/.633 over 30 June at-bats, and already has five two-baggers and seven RBI to his credit during the month as well.

For Friday's outing, he is slotted into the leadoff spot and will play second base. Carpenter is currently on a six-game hit streak while batting .346/.452/.538 with four RBI in the month of June and hasn't missed a start since May 27.

According to Goold, Carpenter jammed a finger during his last at-bat of the game Thursday and manager Mike Matheny was uncertain about his ability to make a throw when the Cardinals took the field for the bottom of the eighth. Greg Garcia came on as Carpenter's replacement at second base. If Carpenter is held out of the lineup for Friday's series opener against the Pirates, Garcia or Jedd Gyorko could take over at second base.

Carpenter went 3-for-4 with a RBI and scored a run in Sunday's 6-3 win over the Giants.

The left-hand-hitting third baseman continued to fill up the stat sheet, hitting his team-leading 17th double and 36th RBI. Not only does Carpenter lead the team in those two important categories, his .931 OPS is best among Cardinals with 50-plus games under their belt this year. Carpenter is on pace to drive in 100-plus runs for the first time in his impressive five-year career.

Carpenter could start to see playing time at second base once Jhonny Peralta (thumb) returns to the lineup next week, FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports.

It would be a boon for Carpenter's owners if he could regain second base eligibility this season, and it sounds like that's a possibility. Carpenter told Rosenthal that he prefers playing on the right side of the infield, as he can see what pitches the catcher is calling and he likes being involved in the action in the middle of the infield. Kolten Wong's struggles and Aledmys Diaz's solid play at shortstop (at least with the bat) make it likely that Peralta could play some third base, with Carpenter getting starts at the keystone.

Carpenter scored four runs in a 4-for-5 game with two RBI in Tuesday's win over Milwaukee.

Carpenter is shredding the Brewers this series. He has two 4-for-5 games and added a double and two triples Tuesday to his pair of doubles from Monday's opener. The explosion has elevated Carpenter's line from .249/.374/.503 to .272/.385/.543 in just two games. His current .928 OPS would be a career high, besting his .873 mark from 2013 (and .871 from 2015).

Carpenter went 4-for-5 with two doubles, three runs and a strikeout Monday against the Brewers.

EDGE Analysis

The 30-year-old third baseman recorded his first multi-hit effort since May 19, and has gone 11-for-38 (.289) over the past 10 games. The Cardinals need him to produce a bit more at the top of the lineup, but perhaps this four-hit game (a season-high mark for him) might be what he needs to get back on track.
