Boston manager Alex Cora said Andriese is being targeted for a swingman role, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. "We're going to stretch him as a starter and see where we go throughout spring training," Cora said. "He'll be ready to do anything. He'll be our utility guy in the pitching staff.
EDGE Analysis
Cora mentioned Brian Johnson, who served in a similar role for the 2018 champion Red Sox, when discussing Andriese's likely role in 2021. Johnson threw 99.1 innings in 2018, making 13 starts and 25 appearances out of the bullpen. It should be a familiar role for Andriese, who has made 50 starts and 123 relief appearances during a six-year MLB career.

Andriese signed a one-year, $1.85 million contract with the Red Sox, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
EDGE Analysis
Per Cotillo, the deal also includes a $3.5 million club option for 2022. Andriese worked largely in a long-relief role for the Angels this past season, posting a 4.50 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 33:11 K:BB in 32 innings. The 31-year-old should get the opportunity to compete for a spot in a Red Sox rotation otherwise lacking in reliable options.

Andriese was non-tendered by the Angels on Wednesday.
EDGE Analysis
He has operated as a long reliever and/or swing man for his entire career and has not logged an ERA under 4.50 since 2016. Last year, he posted a 4.50 ERA and a career-best 1.00 WHIP, so he should catch on somewhere, but he may need to accept a pay cut.

Andriese picked up the save against the Rockies on Sunday, striking out four across two scoreless innings. He did not allow a baserunner.
EDGE Analysis
After picking up his first save of the campaign in Saturday's win, manager Joe Maddon didn't hesitate to go right back to the right-hander Sunday. Andriese logged two clean innings, striking out four Rockies while not allowing a baserunner. Though Ty Buttrey and Felix Pena have received the bulk of save opportunities in recent weeks, it would not be surprising to see Andriese get another shot to close going forward.

Andriese earned the save against Colorado on Saturday, pitching a perfect inning and striking out one batter.
EDGE Analysis
With usual closer Ty Buttrey having been deployed in the 10th inning, the Angels turned to Andriese to shut the door on the Rockies after jumping to a three-run lead. The right-hander was up to the task, needing only seven pitches to nail down the save. Andriese hasn't been all that effective for the Angels this season -- he has a 5.40 ERA over 10 outings -- so he'll likely resume his low-leverage role moving forward.

Andriese (1-2) was tagged with the loss against Seattle on Monday, throwing 1.2 innings and allowing one run on one hit and one walk while striking out two.
EDGE Analysis
Andriese came on in the fifth inning and retired the final two batters of the frame, but a Jose Marmolejos solo homer in the following inning was enough to saddle the right-hander with a loss in the low-scoring affair. Andriese had aspirations of starting to begin the season but has struggled throughout the campaign, posting a 6.41 ERA and 1.47 WHIP over 19.2 innings.

Andriese allowed one run on three hits in three innings of relief against the Mariners on Wednesday. He struck out one batter.
EDGE Analysis
Andriese piggybacked Julio Teheran, who lasted just 2.2 innings as he continues to build up his workload. The right-hander now owns a 4.35 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 7:4 K:BB through 10.1 innings this season. According to Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register, manager Joe Maddon said he really likes Andriese in the bullpen, so it's possible he shifts to a long-relief role moving forward.

Andriese (0-1) allowed four runs on four hits and three walks while striking out only one in 1.2 innings in a loss to the Astros on Friday.
EDGE Analysis
Andriese's short outing Friday forced to Angels to dig deep into the bullpen, ultimately using nine total pitchers in the high-scoring battle with the Astros. It was Andriese's first start of the year -- he previously tossed 5.2 scoreless innings against the Athletics in relief of Shohei Ohtani on July 26. The bad outing inflated Andriese's ERA to 4.91 in 7.1 innings this season. He's expected to face the Rangers on the road next Friday in his next start.

Andriese allowed just three hits and a walk while striking out five in 5.2 innings in relief of Shohei Ohtani during Sunday's loss to the Athletics.
EDGE Analysis
Andriese was needed in a long-relief role Sunday, as Ohtani failed to record an out in the first inning. Andriese performed admirably on short notice, allowing the Angels to pull within a run while he was on the mound. The 30-year-old right-hander will all but certainly not make his scheduled start Tuesday versus the Mariners -- it remains to be seen when he'll start his first game of the year.

Andriese indicated that he has added a cutter and two-seam/sinker to his arsenal now that he has shifted back to starting, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
Andriese has utilized both the cutter and the two-seamer in the past, most notably early in his career as a starter with Tampa Bay. The right-hander was used exclusively in relief with Arizona last season and consequently relied almost entirely on his four-seamer (49.6 percent usage) and changeup (37.0 percent usage). Andriese has posted a 4.64 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 202:63 K:BB over 236.2 innings in 49 career starts.
