Marcus Thames has retired from baseball. Thames actually hasn't officially announced his retirement, but he didn't play in 2012 and has been hired as he new hitting coach for the Yankees' High-A affiliate in Tampa. The 35-year-old batted .246/.309/.485 with 115 homers over 10 major league seasons.

Yankees signed OF Marcus Thames to a minor-league contract. A solid role player for the Yankees a year ago, Thames hit just .197 with two home runs and seven RBI in 66 at-bats while battling calf and quad injuries as a member of the Dodgers this season. The owner of a career .260 average and .824 OPS against lefties, Thames should likely be up in New York at some point this summer as long as he can round back to full health.

Dodgers designated OF Marcus Thames for assignment. The Dodgers signed Thames to a one-year, $1 million contract this offseason with the hope that he'd mash left-handed pitching. Instead he struggled mightily in 70 plate appearances, missing about a month with a quad strain, and posting a .197/.243/.333 slash line with two homers when healthy. Thames could still be salvaged, however. Between 2006-2010, as a member of the Tigers and Yankees, he had an .820 OPS and 94 homers in 1,547 plate appearances. A team in desperate need of outfield punch might give him a shot.

Marcus Thames was scheduled to do outfield drills before Monday's game against the Mets. Thames hasn't played in the field since leaving a game on June 24 with a left calf strain. Don Mattingly said that Thames will also field some ground balls at first base, as the Dodgers are without a backup first baseman now that Casey Blake is on the disabled list.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly indicated that Marcus Thames (calf) might have to be placed on the disabled list. An MRI on Thames' calf was negative, and he probably doesn't need a full 15 days off, but Mattingly isn't sure he wants to carry him on the roster if all he can do is DH and pinch-hit. Thames is only able to run at about 75 percent. "I just have to know if I can use him," Mattingly said. "At this point, I don't think there's any way he can play in the field." The Dodgers should make a decision on Thames soon.
