Semien led off as customary with a righty in Felix Hernandez on the mound and provided plenty from the top of the order. The shortstop has now hit safely in five straight, and he's driven in five runs over the last three contests overall. Semien has been a much more prominent presence on the base paths in the second half of the season overall, as evidenced by a post-All-Star-break OBP of .365 that represents a 58-improvement over his first-half figure.

Semien has regularly been serving as the Athletics' table setter against left-handed pitching, but the leadoff assignment in the series finale is more notable with right-hander Felix Hernandez on the mound for Seattle. Nick Martini has been the Athletics' primary option atop the order of late versus righties, but since he was optioned to Triple-A Nashville a few days earlier, it looks like those duties could now fall to Semien. Though he's fared better versus southpaws this season with a 112 wRC+, Semien has at least hit a palatable .263 in his matchups against right-handed pitching.

He's already set career-best marks in stolen bases and runs scored, so Semien will look to continue to build on his strong campaign in the final motnh of the season.

The veteran shortstop's 408-foot shot off Gerrit Cole in the second inning also snapped an 0-for-12 slump that had encompassed his last three games. Semien has now compiled the second-highest RBI total of his career (48), while his .260 average is his best outside of his initial big-league cup of coffee with the White Sox in 2013.

It's led to an 11-point boost in Semien's batting average to .267, after his season figure had mostly lingered in the .245-.255 range for a month-plus.

Semien followed up his three-hit, two-homer effort on Saturday with another three-hit performance to bring his slash line up to .263/.322/.386 through 471 at-bats. That slugging percentage is still below what one would hope get out of an everyday fantasy shortstop, but he's been hot lately, so if he keeps rolling that number could work its way over .400 in the near future. All told, however, his current OPS of .708 is just about in line with his career mark of .712, so it wouldn't be surprising if it remains in that area.

The shortstop also crossed the plate on Khris Davis' fielder's choice with what would turn out to be the winning run, ultimately being called safe when the home-plate umpire noted Yasmani Grandal failed to hold onto the ball. Semien has been consistent at the plate during the season's second half (.275/.367/.348), but he's provided just five extra-base hits (all doubles) in 80 plate appearances during that stretch.
