Machado entered Thursday batting a mediocre .250, and he had yet to go deep over his first 56 plate appearances in 2023. The star third baseman finally got off the schneid with a first-inning solo homer. Machado's start to the season has been disappointing, but chances are that he'll get in a groove eventually given that he averaged 30 homers and 104 RBI over his past two campaigns.

Machado went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, two runs and a stolen base in a 5-4 win over Atlanta on Friday.

EDGE Analysis

Machado has hit pretty well so far this season, batting .310 through 32 plate appearances. However, he's yet to go deep, and Friday's double was just his second extra-base hit of the campaign. The two runs he scored and the theft he nabbed in the win were also his first of 2023, so perhaps he'll start racking up counting stats to complement the nice batting average.

Machado was ejected from Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks for arguing an automatic third-strike call in the first inning.

Machado tried to call time as the pitch clock ticked down, but the request was denied and then he quickly got the heave-ho after voicing his displeasure with home plate umpire Ron Kulpa. Machado and the Padres are finalizing an 11-year, $350 million extension Sunday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

Machado has demonstrated an unbelievable ability to bounce back from poor showings. The last six times the star third baseman has gone hitless, he has followed up with a multi-hit performance.

Machado isn't in the starting lineup for Monday's game against San Francisco.

The 30-year-old slugger will get a day off after the Padres officially clinched a playoff spot Sunday. Brandon Drury will move to third base in his absence, moving Josh Bell into first base and opening up a chance for Brandon Dixon to start as San Diego's designated hitter, batting ninth.
