Waldrop has signed a minor league contract with the Mariners that includes an invite to spring training, MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 25-year-old Waldrop will get a fresh start with Seattle after fizzling out in the Reds' organization. A 12th-round pick in 2010, he hit just .252/.300/.363 with Triple-A Louisville last season and did little of note in a 15-game cup of coffee with the big club. He's limited defensively to first base and the outfield corners, and Waldrop simply doesn't hit enough to profile well at those positions as a big leaguer.

The Reds needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for lefty reliever Wandy Peralta, and Waldrop was deemed expendable. If the 24-year-old outfielder couldn't earn a spot with the Reds, who have one of the worst outfields in baseball, it's hard to imagine another team bringing him in on anything other than a minor league deal. He has a career .217/.250/.261 slash line with zero home runs in 24 big league plate appearances and he managed just a .663 OPS at Triple-A this year.

The Reds optioned Waldrop to Triple-A Louisville on Friday.
EDGE Analysis
Waldrop received just two pinch-hit at-bats after being recalled earlier this week, so the Reds decided to send him back to Louisville to open up a roster spot for pitcher Michael Lorenzen, who was activated from the bereavement list Friday. Waldrop could rejoin the Reds later this season when rosters expand in September.

Waldrop has appeared in 13 games for the Reds on the season, notching five hits, including a double, in 20 at-bats. In 81 games for Louisville, Waldrop slashed .250/.293/.370 with 27 RBI and 19 doubles.

Homer Bailey's activation from the 60-day disabled list Thursday, the Reds needed to clear a spot on the active roster. Cincinnati ended up sending Waldrop back down to Louisville to get more regular playing time. Waldrop, who was called up on July 17, only logged four at-bats during his recent stint with the big league club.

Waldrop was recalled by the Reds on June 4, accumulating five hits in 17 at-bats in his short time with the big-league club. He'll head back to Triple-A Louisville where he was hitting .247 with four home runs and 17 RBI in 46 games this season. Waldrop, who showed a lot of promise in the lower minors, has yet to really get going since being called up to Triple-A in 2015.

Waldrop's plate discipline had improved at Triple-A Louisville over last season, but at nine walks and 37 strikeouts over 162 at-bats there, it still wasn't very good. Barring injuries and/or trades, this isn't an audition for more regular playing time in the near future.
