The veteran righty posted a 4.79 ERA over his final five seasons, but Hendricks -- who turns 37 next month -- will finish with a career 3.79 ERA, two top-10 Cy Young finishes and one ERA title in 2016.

Hendricks came away with a no-decision in Friday's 4-3 win over the Astros, giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits over five innings. He struck out eight without walking a batter.

The 35-year-old right-hander racked up an eye-popping 34 called or swinging strikes over 108 pitches (72 total strikes) in what could be his final big-league start, as Hendricks is said to be contemplating retirement. He hasn't been pitching like someone who has nothing left to offer an MLB staff, however -- he's allowed two earned runs or fewer in five of his last six starts, posting a 3.67 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 27:6 K:BB over 34.1 innings to close his 2025 campaign on a high note.

Hendricks is expected to announce his retirement from professional baseball following the 2025 season, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.

Nightengale relays that the 35-year-old right-hander has already informed friends and family that he expects to bring an end to his 12-year MLB career, though a formal announcement may not be made until later in the offseason. After joining the Angels on a one-year, $2.5 million deal this past winter, Hendricks has been a serviceable innings eater, logging an 8-10 record, 4.79 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 106:43 K:BB across 159.2 frames. He spent the first 11 seasons of his career with the Cubs, winning his lone World Series title in 2016 while also leading the majors in ERA (2.13) and finishing third in NL Cy Young Award balloting that same season.

Hendricks (8-10) allowed three hits and struck out five without walking a batter over seven shutout innings to earn the win Saturday versus the Rockies.

This was Hendricks' fourth scoreless outing of the season, two of which have come in September. Saturday's performance was a big bounce-back effort for the right-hander, who had been shelled for nine runs in 3.1 innings in his previous start against Seattle. Hendricks lowered his ERA to 4.79 and has added a 1.28 WHIP and 106:43 K:BB through 159.2 innings over 30 starts this season. He is projected for one more start this season, which is lined up to be at home against the Astros.

Hendricks (7-10) allowed nine runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out six over 3.1 innings to take the loss Sunday versus the Mariners.

EDGE Analysis

Hendricks had allowed just three runs over his previous three starts (19 innings), but the Mariners' offense was able to do damage against him in the third and fourth innings. This was the third time in his last seven starts that he fell short of completing five frames. Hendricks is now at a 5.01 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 101:43 K:BB through 152.2 innings over 29 starts this season. The veteran right-hander is tentatively projected for a road start in Colorado for his next outing.

Hendricks (7-9) earned the win Tuesday against the Twins, allowing four hits and one walk in seven shutout innings. He struck out six.

It was one of Hendricks' finest efforts so far, turning in his third scoreless outing of the year and tying his second-most punchouts of the season in his second-longest outing of 2025. The veteran right-hander has now submitted three consecutive quality starts as well. Hendricks owns a 4.58 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 95:41 K:BB across 149.1 innings, and he's projected to take the mound against the division-rival Mariners this weekend.

Hendricks allowed two runs on three hits and three walks while failing to record a strikeout over six innings to take a no-decision versus the Royals on Thursday.

EDGE Analysis

Hendricks was able to limit the damage, as both runs on his line came on solo home runs. He's posted consecutive quality starts for the first time since mid-June, but he's now gone seven starts without a win. In that span, he's allowed 20 runs over 35.2 innings while posting a 19:14 K:BB. Hendricks has mediocre numbers overall with a 4.81 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 89:40 K:BB through 142.1 innings across 27 starts. His next outing is projected to be at home versus the Twins.

Hendricks didn't factor into the decision against the Astros on Saturday, allowing one run on seven hits while striking out two over six innings.

Hendricks gave up at least one hit in every inning except his last but managed to limit the damage by holding Houston to just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position, with the one hit coming on Jesus Sanchez's third-inning RBI infield single. The outing was a much-needed rebound for the veteran, who had surrendered 16 earned runs over 18.2 innings across his previous four starts entering Saturday. The right-hander will take his 4.89 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 89:37 K:BB into his next scheduled start against Kansas City, a potentially favorable streaming spot, with the Royals sitting near the bottom of the league in production against righties.

The Angels right-hander conceded three or more free passes for the sixth time this season in his first ever appearance against his former club. Hendricks limited the Chicago lineup -- yielding two doubles and three singles -- but wound up being tagged with three or more runs for the third consecutive outing. The 35-year-old remains difficult to roster in fantasy thanks to a 5.04 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 87:37 K:BB over 130.1 total frames while giving up 21 homers. Hendricks is currently in line to make his next start at Houston next weekend.
