The closer rebounded from a disastrous outing Monday to secure his sixth straight save attempt. Finnegan (2-5) took the loss Monday against the Diamondbacks, coughing up five runs on five hits while recording only one out.
EDGE Analysis
The Nationals' closer got the call to protect a four-run lead in the bottom of the ninth inning, but instead Finnegan served up a leadoff triple to Alek Thomas and a two-run homer to Ketel Marte before pinch hitter Corbin Carroll walked it off with a two-run shot of his own. Finnegan has served up three homers in his last two appearances and nine in 44 innings on the season, which could give pause to trade-deadline shoppers looking for bullpen help. However, his 3.48 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 28 saves in 32 chances will still likely fetch a strong return if the Nats elect to move him.

Finnegan struck out one in a perfect ninth inning to record his 28th save of the season in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Reds.
EDGE Analysis
Despite turning to Finnegan for save chances Friday and Saturday against Cincinnati, Washington manager Dave Martinez went back to the well again for the third game of the series. The right-hander nailed down the sweep for the Nationals on only five pitches, all strikes. Finnegan's 28 saves matched the career high he set in 2023, and his heavy workload this season hasn't been affecting his performance -- over 10 appearances in July he's posted a 2.89 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 7:2 K:BB in 9.1 innings.

EDGE Analysis
Finnegan earned a save in Washington's first game of the second half Friday, and he was back on the mound one day later to close things out again. The right-hander did so without much stress, retiring the side in order on 15 pitches. Finnegan is up to 27 saves on the campaign, third-most in the majors and one short of the career-high mark he established last season.

Finnegan earned the save in Friday's 8-5 win over the Reds, allowing one walk before recording the final out.
EDGE Analysis
It didn't appear that Finnegan would be needed Friday, as the Nationals carried an 8-1 lead into the ninth. However, Jose Ferrer and Derek Law would combine to allow four runs in the frame, forcing the Nats to turn to Finnegan with two outs. The right-hander would issue a walk before ultimately getting Elly De La Cruz to ground out to seal an 8-5 win. The 32-year-old Finnegan has been excellent for Washington this year -- he's up to 26 saves, third-most in the league, with a 2.43 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 42:14 K:BB across 40.2 innings.

The 32-year-old has the third most saves in baseball (25) and has recorded a 2.45 ERA across 40.1 innings pitched. It's Finnegan's first All-Star selection.
