It was perhaps the worst outing of the season for Finnegan, allowing a season-high three runs and three hits. The 33-year-old has flirted with danger lately, allowing seven hits in his last five games, but this was the first time that he allowed a run credited to him over that stretch. The right-hander is now 18-for-23 on save opportunities for the season.

Finnegan earned the save in Wednesday's 2-0 win over the Cubs. He allowed two hits while striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning.

Finnegan found himself in trouble in the ninth, allowing a pair of singles that brought Kyle Tucker to the plate as the potential tying run. However, Finnegan managed to coax a ground out off the bat of Tucker, closing out Washington's shutout victory. Finnegan improved to 17-for-20 in save chances this season. He's posted a 2.49 ERA with a 1.34 WHIP and 19:8 K:BB across 21.2 innings.

Finnegan appears to be recovered from shoulder fatigue that kept him out of game action for a week. He's allowed three runs (one earned) over his last three innings. Finnegan made his first appearance in a week, as a bout of shoulder fatigue prompted the Nationals to give him some rest. The right-hander might have been a candidate to pitch earlier in the series, but a 9-1 loss Tuesday and a 9-0 win Wednesday presented no high-leverage opportunities. Thursday's appearance was fairly pressure-free as well, coming in the bottom of the 10th inning after Washington put up seven runs in the top of the frame. Finnegan should continue to dominate save opportunities for Washington after converting 15 of 18 chances prior to his brief absence, although his name will likely circulate in trade rumors once again this summer with the Nats far from playoff contention.

Finnegan was unavailable for Saturday's game against the Giants due to shoulder fatigue, Spencer Nusbaum of The Washington Post reports.

Finnegan hasn't pitched since blowing the save against Atlanta on Thursday. He reported soreness in his shoulder following his last outing, but manager Dave Martinez said that imaging on his shoulder came back negative, and the 33-year-old righty is considered day-to-day for now.
