After moving down to the No. 2 spot in the order in Tuesday's 6-2 loss, Farmer will be back in the table-setting role for the fourth time in five games Wednesday. With Jonathan India (hamstring) landing on the injured list Tuesday, Farmer looks like he'll have security near the top of the order. Farmer is hitting .317 and is getting on base at a .378 clip this season, but the lack of productive and/or healthy bats in the Cincinnati lineup at the moment may not help him pile up runs despite handling leadoff duties.

However, his presence atop the order is significant given that he has primarily hit eighth across his first eight appearances. With southpaw Julio Urias on the mound and Jonathan India (hamstring) sidelined, Farmer will get his chance to lead off.

After his sixth-inning steal against the battery of Sean Newcomb and Travis d'Arnaud, Farmer is already halfway to his 2021 stolen base total. Adding a speed element would make Farmer much more interesting from a fantasy standpoint. He's otherwise a modest contributor, even with near-everyday playing time.

It's possible, maybe even likely, that Farmer will remain the starter at shortstop even when Barrero is healthy enough to play. In previous camps he'd get work at multiple positions in anticipation of being a utility player, but this year he's exclusively getting reps at shortstop.

Given the direction of the franchise, the Reds will likely turn to the younger Barrero at some point, if not right out of the gates, unless Farmer tops his 2021 production.
