Crawford's never pitched into the eighth before, and while he certainly could've based on pitch count, manager Alex Cora decided to turn to the bullpen for the final six outs. Crawford contributed to shutting out the Yankees offense for the first time since April and now owns an 11:0 K:BB over his last 13 innings after back-to-back starts without issuing a walk. The 28-year-old now owns a 3.24 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 106:28 K:BB in 105.2 innings and will look to finish out the first half strong as he prepares to face the Royals at home in a weekend series.

Crawford (4-7) earned the win against the Marlins on Tuesday, allowing one run on three hits and no walks with seven strikeouts over six innings.

Crawford allowed a solo home run to Jake Burger in the fifth inning but was otherwise fantastic, registering a whopping 16 swinging strikes on just 72 pitches. He only threw 23 pitches June 26 as the game was suspended for weather but has now logged quality starts in his past four official contests. On the season, the 28-year-old owns a 3.47 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 102:28 K:BB over 98.2 innings and lines up for a road matchup with the Yankees this weekend.

Crawford's next start will come on Tuesday in Miami after his last outing was suspended by rain, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.

Crawford threw only 23 pitches over 1.1 scoreless innings Wednesday against the Blue Jays before inclement weather forced any early end to his night. Despite the righty's limited workload in that outing, the Red Sox have elected to give Crawford five days of rest before his next start. He's tentatively lined up for two starts next week, as a date with the Yankees looms next weekend.

Crawford (3-7) took the loss Friday as the Red Sox fell 5-2 to the Reds, giving up five runs (three earned) on five hits -- including three home runs -- and two walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out seven.

EDGE Analysis

Some defensive misadventures by Boston softened the blow to the right-hander's ERA and allowed him to escape with his third straight quality start and eighth of the season, but it's hard to ignore the issues Crawford has had of late keeping the ball in the park. He's been tagged for multiple homers in three straight outings and served up at least one in seven straight, stumbling to a 5.36 ERA over the latter stretch despite a 1.19 WHIP and 43:12 K:BB through 40.1 innings. The right-hander is at a 3.54 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 88:26 K:BB through 86.1 innings over 15 starts this season. He's projected to make his next start on the road in Cincinnati.

The right-hander got very little support from his offense or defense, but the difference in the game was the two solo shots Crawford served up to Kyle Schwarber. The quality start was Crawford's sixth of the season, but his first in over a month, while the eight Ks were a season high. Since beating the Giants on May 1, he's gone 0-5 in seven starts with a 5.40 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 39:12 K:BB in 40 innings. Crawford will try to get back in the win column in his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home this weekend against the Yankees.

EDGE Analysis

Crawford's next turn comes up Sunday versus the White Sox, but the Red Sox want to give him some extra rest given his recent struggles (he's allowed four or more earned runs in four of his last five starts). Boston is expected to go with a bullpen game Sunday.

Tuesday's start was the latest in a rough patch for the 28-year-old Crawford, who's allowed four or more earned runs in four of his last five showings. During that span, Crawford is 0-4 with a 6.43 ERA across 28.0 innings. However, a road start against the White Sox on Sunday could be exactly what he needs to get back on track.

Crawford was excellent outside of the second inning -- he gave up five runs on three hits, a walk and a hit batter in that frame, with the big blow being a grand slam by Gunnar Henderson. The right-hander did hold the Orioles scoreless on one hit the rest of the way, but the damage was too much to overcome against Baltimore starter Corbin Burnes. Crawford has surrendered 11 runs over 10.1 innings across his past two starts, pushing his season ERA to 3.29. It sat at 2.17 prior to the two-game downturn.
