The infielder slashed .302/.350/.407 with four homers and 28 stolen bases for Triple-A Indianapolis this season.

Despite recording only three hits in 27 at-bats since being promoted from Triple-A Indianapolis in mid-August, Newman will pick up his fourth start in a row as the Pirates give Josh Harrison the day off. That would result in fewer opportunities at the keystone for the likes of Newman and Adam Frazier.

Across 109 games with Indianapolis, he slashed .302/.350/.407 with four home runs, 35 RBI and 28 stolen bases. Newman isn't a power-hitter and his defense doesn't provide much additional value, but he's improved his gap power at the plate with 30 doubles and a pair of triples this season. With Jordy Mercer (calf) placed on the DL in a corresponding move, Newman should serve as Adeiny Hechavarria's backup at shortstop.

Newman went 5-for-5 with a home run, triple, two doubles and three RBI for Triple-A Indianapolis in its 12-5 rout of Lehigh Valley on Tuesday.
