Newman will draw his fourth start in five games, with three coming at shortstop and one at third base. Since returning from the injured list earlier in May, Newman has sizzled at the plate to the tune of a .375/.444/.521 batting line. The Pirates could soon commit to Newman in a full-time role with youngster Cole Tucker slashing a brutal .096/.145/.154 so far this month.

With the exception of Josh Bell, the Pirates have gotten little production of late from their starting infield. The ongoing offensive struggles of third baseman Colin Moran and shortstop Cole Tucker in particular have opened up more work for Newman, who had started in six of the Pirates' past eight games. Though Newman is back on the bench Sunday, his 13-for-36 (.361 average) showing at the plate since returning from the injured list earlier this month should continue to earn him at least semi-regular starts.

Newman will make his first major-league start at third base Monday against the Diamondbacks.

Newman has made eight starts at shortstop and four at the keystone this season, but he'll move to the hot corner Monday, with Jung Ho Kang (side) heading to the shelf and Colin Moran struggling to find his swing. He's 6-for-13 since coming off the IL. With Cole Tucker overmatched at the plate, it wouldn't be surprising to see Newman play more frequently ahead of Tucker at shortstop. Whether Newman can continue to hit at the major league level remains to be seen, but he has posted a career slash line of .287/.343/.387 in parts of five minor league campaigns.

Newman entered Saturday's game as a pinch runner and later hit a two-run triple in a 6-4 win over Oakland.

Prior to kicking off the rehab assignment, Newman hadn't seen any action in the outfield during his professional career. According to Adam Berry of MLB.com, Newman is scheduled to play his natural position (shortstop) in rehab games Friday and Saturday, so his usage in the outfield may have just been an experiment to gauge his viability as a super-utility player. With four outfielders (Corey Dickerson, Lonnie Chisenhall, Starling Marte and Jose Osuna) already on the 10-day injured list and another banged up (Bryan Reynolds), the Pirates could certainly benefit from adding more depth to that group.

General manager Neal Huntington said Sunday that Newman (finger) will likely begin a rehab assignment this week, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Newman, who is returning from a laceration on one of the fingers on his right hand, is expected to play multiple different positions during the rehab assignment and will have his throwing monitored carefully while in the minors.
