Teng has impressed the Astros' staff early in spring, giving him a chance to make the Opening Day roster, per Chandler Rome of The Athletic.

Per Rome, Houston has been impressed by Teng's ability to record swinging strikes "with multiple breaking balls". The right-hander was traded to the Astros in late January after posting a 6.37 ERA across 29.2 innings with San Francisco last year. Teng's ability to provide multiple innings out of the bullpen is certainly viewed as an asset, as Houston plans to open the season with a six-man rotation. Their middle relief depth has already been tested, as Enyel De Los Santos (knee) has yet to resume throwing, opening the door for Teng to claim a roster spot.

Teng was traded from the Giants to the Astros in exchange for a minor-league player on Thursday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.

Teng has experience as both a reliever and starter in the majors, and he worked primarily out of the Giants' rotation toward the end of the 2025 season. He still has two options remaining, so there's a strong chance Teng begins the season with Triple-A Sugar Land, though he should contribute to the big-league team at some point in 2026.

Teng and Sonny Gray were locked in a pitchers duel Sunday, with the former keeping the Cardinals off the board through the first four frames. Things fell apart in the fifth for Teng, who issued three straight walks before yielding an RBI single and being pulled from the inning, but not before being tagged for three more runs. Teng was able to generate 14 whiffs on 77 pitches (41 strikes) and has registered eight strikeouts in back-to-back starts, but his five walks were a season high. The Giants currently have a six-man rotation, but it's unclear whether Teng will get another turn or head back to Triple-A Sacramento.

Teng (2-3) earned the win over Colorado on Monday, allowing two runs on nine hits and no walks while striking out eight batters over 5.1 innings.

Teng struggled with an 8.78 ERA over four starts in August prior to a brief minor-league demotion, but he looked like a different pitcher Monday. Not only did the right-hander limit the Rockies to two runs, he also fanned eight batters, doubling his previous season-best mark. Teng did allow traffic in all but one of his frames, but the Rockies didn't score on him until after he gave way for a reliever with one out in the sixth. Teng figures to get another turn in the rotation given this strong outing, and he lines up to face the Cardinals in St. Louis this weekend.

The Giants recalled Teng from Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday, and he's expected to start Monday's game against the Rockies in Colorado, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The right-hander has struggled to an 8.78 ERA across 13.1 frames in the majors this season, but he'll receive another opportunity with the Giants after starter Carson Whisenhunt (back) was placed on the injured list Sunday. Despite his struggles over four outings with the Giants, Teng has been effective for Sacramento this season with a 3.63 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 89:22 K:BB across 57 innings.

Teng's last two outings have been against San Diego, and he's allowed a total of 10 runs (eight earned) over five innings against the Giants' division rivals. Teng has maintained the last spot in San Francisco's rotation this month, staying in the majors over Carson Whisenhunt when Landon Roupp returned from an elbow injury. That said, Teng's 8.78 ERA and 12:9 K:BB through 13.1 innings over four appearances haven't inspired much confidence in his major-league readiness. If he gets another start, it's projected to be another challenging matchup this weekend in Milwaukee.

After tossing a scoreless first inning, Teng unraveled in the second, allowing six straight batters to reach after recording the first out. With Landen Roupp (elbow) expected to rejoin the Giants' rotation Friday, Teng will likely head back to Triple-A or assume a bullpen role.
