Tomlin signed a one-year, $1 million contract with Atlanta on Wednesday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.

Tomlin spent the past two seasons in Atlanta, and he'll remain with the team for at least one more season after recording a 4.76 ERA and 36:8 K:BB over 39.2 innings during the abbreviated 2020 campaign. He worked as both a starter and reliever last year, but the 36-year-old should work primarily out of the bullpen in 2021. The deal includes a $1.25 million club option with a $250,000 buyout for 2022.

Tomlin made his most recent appearance for the Braves out of the bullpen, giving up two runs over 2.2 innings in a Sept. 16 outing in Baltimore.

The recent returns of Cole Hamels and Max Fried from the injured list appear to have at least temporarily bumped Tomlin from the rotation, as the Braves have opted to keep younger arms in Kyle Wright and Huascar Ynoa in starting roles over him. Atlanta will need to add another starter to the rotation Wednesday versus Miami, so Tomlin could be a candidate to pitch that day if he's not needed in relief Monday or Tuesday.

As a result, Tomlin should keep picking up starts so long as his performance continues to warrant regular starts. After thriving in long relief to begin the season, Tomlin fared respectably in his first start in Tuesday's loss to Washington, working four innings (51 pitches) and giving up two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out two. He'll likely push his pitch count up to the 60-to-75 range Sunday.

It's not clear whether the team plans to keep Tomlin -- who has a sparkling 2.35 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 18:4 K:BB through 15.1 innings -- in the rotation for now or move him back into long relief in support of some younger arms, but if he does stay on schedule, he'd next take the mound Sunday, at home against the Phillies.

He has not logged more than 2.1 innings in any outing this season and has not logged more than 1.1 innings in an outing since Aug. 1, so this will not be a traditional start. Perhaps Huascar Ynoa or Bryse Wilson will be used as the primary pitcher behind Tomlin.
