He'd allowed just one run over his last two starts combined, but he'd given up 11 runs across 10.1 innings in the two outings before that. Overall, Gray has a 3.69 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 111:44 K:BB through 131.2 innings across 23 starts this year. He's lacked consistency over the last couple of months, but he'll aim to get back on track on the road versus the Mets next week.

A Marcus Semien error in the fourth inning helped mitigate the damage to Gray's ERA, but it was still another shaky performance from the right-hander -- he's failed to complete six innings in three straight starts, and he's been tagged for four runs or more in five of his last six. Despite the summer swoon, he'll take a 3.72 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 95:39 K:BB through 113.2 innings into his next outing, which is likely to come next weekend in San Francisco.

Gray will start Saturday against the Marlins.

This will be Gray's first time pitching since July 24, a span of 11 days in between outings. Since he last pitched, the Rangers acquired two new starters at the trade deadline, which altered the rotation pattern and may have resulted in the long layoff. Gray had a leg injury entering the previous start, so perhaps that was involved in the decision to give him so much time off.
