Gant is one of two finalists for the Cardinals' fifth starter spot, Mark Saxon of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
Per Saxon, it comes down to Gant, who is out of minor-league options, and Dakota Hudson, who has looked sharp all spring, for that final spot. The expectation is that Carlos Martinez (shoulder) will eventually return in May or June, but by then there may be another opening, so whoever wins the fifth starter spot could run with the job. Gant logged a 3.61 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 81 strikeouts in 97.1 innings as a big-league starter in 2018. That ERA slightly oversells his effectiveness over that stretch, but he has the stuff to be a serviceable option in many formats if he is starting every fifth day.

Gant will make his next spring start Wednesday versus the Yankees, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Gant has been impressive through two appearances, allowing just an earned run on five hits and a pair of walks over five innings. The 26-year-old could well alternate between the bullpen and rotation once again this season depending on injuries following a 2018 campaign in which he generated a solid 3.47 ERA across 26 appearances (19 starts).

Gant allowed one run on four hits while striking out one across three innings Friday against the Astros.
EDGE Analysis
Gant allowed a run-scoring double to Carlos Correa in the first inning but settled in from there, blanking the Astros over the next two innings while fanning Correa on three pitches for his last out. The right-hander has now allowed just one run through five innings this spring. With Carlos Martinez (shoulder) questionable for the start of the season, Gant could be a possible rotation option, though he seems more likely to open the year in the bullpen.

Gant fell to 7-6 on the season after a poor performance Saturday against the Dodgers. He lasted just 4.1 innings, giving up six runs on six hits and four walks while striking out four.
EDGE Analysis
Gant was in trouble from the start, allowing a two-run homer to Manny Machado in the first inning. The Dodgers added a solo shot from Yasiel Puig in the fourth before chasing Gant in the fifth when he allowed three of the first four runners to reach base, all of whom would come around to score. The disappointing outing may be just a blip for Gant, as he hadn't allowed more than two earned runs in any of his last seven starts. It's worth noting, however, that he's already thrown 156 innings on the season, blowing past his previous high of 123. He'll add to that total next Friday against the Giants.

Gant (7-5) allowed two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out six over 6.2 inning Sunday, picking up the win over Detroit.
EDGE Analysis
Gant sailed through the first six inning unscathed, and although he surrendered two runs in the seventh, he managed to leave the ballgame with a three-run lead. The 26-year-old has been stellar over his previous seven outings, going 4-1 with a 1.61 ERA and 31 strikeouts. Gants next start is slated for Friday against the Dodgers.

Gant will start Tuesday against the Nationals instead of Wednesday as originally planned, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The switch means that Gant will square off against Erick Fedde instead of Tanner Roark, giving him potentially slightly better odds at earning a win. It also means he ends up with a two-start week, as he'll throw again Sunday against the Tigers.

Gant (6-5) pitched 5.2 scoreless innings and picked up a win Thursday, allowing just three hits and three walks while striking out six in the 5-0 win over Pittsburgh.
EDGE Analysis
Gant wasn't incredibly efficient, needing 94 pitches Thursday, but still managed another very good performance. In his last five starts, the 26-year-old has gone 3-1, allowing just five runs over 28.1 innings and dropping his ERA from 3.89 to 3.34 in the process. Gant will take the mound in Washington on Tuesday.

Gant (5-5) allowed two earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out one across 4.1 innings to take the loss Sunday against the Brewers.
EDGE Analysis
Gant allowed eight baserunners but managed to limit the damage by holding the Brewers to just one extra-base hit -- a double by Mike Moustakas that drove in two runs. However, he needed 86 pitches to retire 13 batters, including a taxing 28-pitch third inning. Though he has a respectable 3.76 ERA and 1.23 WHIP across 79 innings, Gant has managed to complete six innings only twice in his past nine starts, making it difficult for him to rack up strikeouts while also limiting his win potential.

Gant (5-4) got the win Tuesday, allowing one run on four hits while striking out six over 5.1 innings against the Nationals.
EDGE Analysis
Gant was sharp in this one, attacking hitters with 15 first-pitch strikes to the 20 batters he faced, and he also helped out his own cause with a two-run homer in the second inning. The 26-year-old has had a quick hook at times this season, and he was lifted Tuesday after 98 pitches (62 strikes) just two outs away from a quality start. This latest outing brings him to a 3.74 ERA and 1.19 WHIP heading into Sunday's tilt with the Brewers.

Interim manager Mike Shildt confirmed that Gant is still scheduled to start Sunday's series finale against the Cubs despite being used in relief during Wednesday's loss to the Reds, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
EDGE Analysis
Gant had a rough go of it over his one frame versus Cincinnati, allowing two earned runs on a home run by Tucker Barnhart and also issuing two walks while recording a strikeout. Despite throwing 28 pitches, Shildt apparently feels comfortable enough to trot the right-hander out on three days of rest. Goold reports the Cardinals are also considering promoting the promising Dakota Hudson from Triple-A Memphis as a contingency plan in the event they opt to reverse course.
