Gant allowed an earned run on three hits and two walks over five innings in a Grapefruit League win over the Astros on Saturday. He struck out five.
EDGE Analysis
Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports Gant worked up to 77 pitches during the outing, which included three strikeouts of Jose Altuve. Following a rough start where he surrendered four earned runs across 2.2 innings to the Nationals on March 5, Gant has bounced back to yield just three earned runs and post an 8:2 K:BB across the 9.2 innings covering his subsequent pair of spring starts.

Gant allowed two earned runs on four hits and two walks over 4.2 innings in a Grapefruit League win over the Nationals on Monday. He struck out three.
EDGE Analysis
The right-hander worked up to 79 pitches, the most any Cardinals hurler has thrown this spring. Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports Gant's candidacy for a spot in the starting rotation was boosted by this solid outing, in which he made just one costly error -- a two-run homer off the bat of Ryan Zimmerman.

Gant was solid over a four-inning start against the Nationals in a "B" game on Wednesday, Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The right-hander's chances of making the starting rotation to open the season presumably went up a good bit with the news that Alex Reyes has been removed from consideration and will instead operate exclusively in a bullpen role this season, and that Miles Mikolas (shoulder) is unlikely to be ready for Opening Day. Gant helped his own cause with a resurgent effort Wednesday after giving up four runs over two innings to Washington's full squad on Friday.

Gant, competing for the No. 5 role in the starting rotation, allowed four runs on four hits and two walks over two innings in a Grapefruit League loss to the Nationals on Friday. He struck out two.
EDGE Analysis
Gant had opened Grapefruit League play with a pair of scoreless frames versus the Nationals on Sunday, but his second go-around against Washington clearly didn't go anywhere near as smoothly. The right-hander saw his first inning rolled over per spring training rules after he allowed a three-run home run to Alex Avila, a development that led to Gant settling down to subsequently record five straight outs before giving up an RBI double on his final pitch. Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports Gant primarily placed the blame for his struggles on not having anything other than his fastball working Friday. "Definitely room for improvement," Gant said. "I was very non-competitive with my offspeed pitches today. I felt like I had a pretty good heater, but it takes more than a pretty good heater to get it done. Almost every offspeed pitch I threw was pretty noncompetitive, either bouncing or a foot outside on those curveballs."

Gant, who is competing for the one vacancy in the Cardinals' starting rotation, made a strong first impression in his bid by firing a pair of scoreless innings in Sunday's Grapefruit League tie with the Nationals, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran right-hander didn't allow a hit and offset a pair of walks with three strikeouts across his 34-pitch outing. Carlos Martinez, who naturally has a robust career body of work as a starter, and the promising Alex Reyes are considered the other leading candidates for the No. 5 starter role, with the latter also turning in a strong one-inning effort Sunday.

Gant signed a one-year, $2.1 million contract with the Cardinals on Thursday, avoiding arbitration, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
EDGE Analysis
Rather than going to arbitration, Gant and the Cardinals were able to reach an agreement on a one-year deal for 2021. The right-hander dealt with right groin tightness late in the season, but he should be fully healthy in time for spring training. Gant made 17 relief appearances during the abbreviated 2020 season and posted a career-best 2.40 ERA and 1.07 WHIP over 15 innings.

Gant (groin) was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday.
EDGE Analysis
Gant left the first game of Friday's doubleheader with right groin tightness, and he'll land on the injured list prior to Game 2. Nabil Crismatt was recalled in a corresponding move to provide bullpen depth. It's unclear whether Gant could return if the Cardinals make a run in the postseason.

Gant was diagnosed with right groin tightness after leaving Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader against the Brewers, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
EDGE Analysis
Gant returned from a groin issue Sunday after missing a week due to the injury, and it appears as though the issue has flared up again. It's unclear how much time the right-hander could miss as a result.

Gant exited Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader against the Brewers with an apparent injury, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Gant gave up a leadoff single in the top of the sixth inning Friday before leaving the game with a trainer. He dealt with a groin injury recently, although it's unclear whether his issue Friday is related.

Gant (groin) was credited with his seventh hold in a win over the Pirates on Sunday, firing a clean eighth inning.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran right-hander fired nine of his 13 pitches for strikes in his first taste of game action in a week, as Gant received several days off to rest a groin strain. The decision not to put Gant on the injured list ultimately appears to have paid off based on Sunday's performance, and the 28-year-old should be available in his usual capacity for the critical final week of the regular season.
