Gant now owns a 1.93 ERA and 1.18 WHIP over the 9.1 innings covering the eight appearances he's made out of the bullpen, and his ability to work multiple frames makes him a particularly valuable commodity who should have occasional opportunities for wins and holds.

Gant secured his first hold in a win over the Giants on Tuesday, allowing an earned run on a walk over two-thirds of an inning.

Manager Mike Shildt announced Gant's move to the bullpen at the end of last week, and although his outing was particularly brief Monday, the former starter is likely due to see some multi-inning assignments in coming appearances.

Gant had made his first 14 appearances of 2021 as a starter, but he had taken losses in each of his last three starts and will take on a relief role for now. The Cardinals haven't yet announced who will take the right-hander's place in the rotation going forward, but Angel Rondon could be a candidate to do so if the team recalls a pitcher from the minors.

Gant (4-6) took the loss versus Detroit on Wednesday. He allowed three runs on two hits and four walks with four strikeouts in three-plus innings.

EDGE Analysis

Gant threw only 34 of 70 pitches for strikes in the short outing. Wednesday was the fifth time in 14 starts he's walked four or more batters this year, leading to a career-worst 6.7 BB/9. The right-hander has a 3,76 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 50:48 K:BB across 64.2 innings this season. He lines up for a favorable matchup versus Arizona next week, though he's also in line to pitch on the road at Colorado if the team stays on its current pitching schedule.

Gant (4-5) allowed three earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four across 5.1 innings, taking the loss to the Braves on Thursday.

Gant shut out the Braves through two outs in the fifth inning until Guillermo Heredia hit a solo home run. He then failed to get through the sixth frame while giving up another pair of runs. It still wasn't Gant's greatest start, but it was much better than his previous performance against the Cubs when he looked completely lost. The 28-year-old's ERA is up to 3.50 and he has a rough 1.61 WHIP. In addition, he has a poor 1.0 K/BB through 61.2 innings.

Gant had horrible command Saturday, walking five batters in the second inning. In addition, he surrendered a two-run home run to Ian Happ. Needless to say, Gant had an outing to forget after he retired just five of the 11 batters he faced. The 28-year-old had a fantastic start to his season, but he's recently faltered with 12 runs allowed in his last 5.2 innings. He has a 3.36 ERA, but a high 1.65 WHIP in 56.1 innings.

Gant didn't factor into the decision Sunday against the Reds after allowing seven runs on seven hits and three walks while fanning two across four innings.

EDGE Analysis

Gant had one of his worst outings of the season Sunday, giving up a season-high seven runs while allowing three walks for the third straight outings. Even though the right-hander owns a 2.63 ERA on the season, his command issues are being more noticeable as the campaign advances -- he has posted a 16:13 K:BB over his last five games. His next start is scheduled for next week on the road against the Cubs.

Gant got the no-decision Tuesday in a 3-2 in over Los Angeles, pitching six innings and allowing no runs on four hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

EDGE Analysis

Gant held a powerful Dodger's lineup in check most of the night and only ran into trouble in the second and sixth innings when he put two runners on base but was able to navigate the jam. This was his second straight scoreless outing against a quality opponent as the 28-year-old righty is now the owner of a sparkling 1.60 ERA across 50.2 frames.

Gant (4-3) earned the win Wednesday against the White Sox after allowing five hits with three walks and three strikeouts over five scoreless innings.

EDGE Analysis

The right-hander had a fair amount of traffic on the bases but didn't give up any extra-base hits to help blank Chicago across five frames. Gant has a 1.81 ERA over 44.2 innings (nine starts) this season, but his 1.52 WHIP and 35:31 K:BB remain causes for concern.
