The 24-year-old has pitched almost exclusively as a starter in the minors, so a long-relief role would enable him to stay stretched out enough to work as a spot starter, if needed.

The Padres acquired Groome from the Red Sox on Tuesday in exchange for Eric Hosmer, Max Ferguson and Corey Rosier, Sean McAdam of BostonSportsJournal.com reports.

The left-hander threw a career-high 97.1 innings last season and is experiencing his longest stretch of health since joining professional ball. There's still time for the 23-year-old, who stands at 6-foot-6 and 262 pounds, to reclaim the promise he once had.
