Jones went non-tendered by the Rangers on Wednesday, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star Telegram reports.

Jones had only been a Ranger for about two weeks before they decided to not tender him a contract. He came to the Rangers through a five-player trade with the Mariners. Even though the Rangers decided not to tender Jones, they expressed interest in signing him to a minor league deal instead.

Jones joined Tom Wilhelmsen and a player to be named later in exchange for Leonys Martin and Anthony Bass. Expect Jones to serve as a depth outfielder in Texas, after coming off a season in which he spent much of the campaign in Triple-A Tacoma, putting together a .272/.365/.381 slash line with 25 stolen bases at the affiliate.

Jones went 2-for-3 with a steal in a 4-2 loss to the Rockies on Friday.

Jones got a rare start out of the leadoff spot and responded well here. This was only his first significant time since late June and he may garner more playing time with September call-ups. Jones has shown talent throughout his career and if he continues to get starts out of the leadoff spot, he could be a nice sneaky source of steals for the final month of the season.

Jones will start in center field and bat leadoff Friday against the Rockies, Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports.

Part of the team's second wave of September callups, Jones got on base at a .381 clip at Triple-A Tacoma this season while also going 25-for-29 on the basepaths. He's made just three starts with the big club so far this season after floundering to a .250/.278/.311 batting line in 108 games with the team a year ago (72 starts). This is likely just a one-off appearance for him atop the order with Ketel Marte getting a day off.

Jones will return to Seattle after spending the last two months at Triple-A. The outfielder isn't likely to make much of an impact over the next three weeks, and he'll primarily provide depth.

Jones was having an unspectacular year in Triple-A before being called up, hitting for a .264/.338/.362 slash line in 48 games. He should provide outfield depth and replaces pitcher Danny Farquhar on the 25-man roster.

Jones is listed on the 7-day DL for Triple-A Tacoma due to a concussion. The head injury doesn't appear to be an overly serious one for Jones, as the outfielder was able to take part in batting practice Monday. He could soon receive clearance to run the bases and play the field.
