Smith has accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A El Paso, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
He's no longer on the 40-man roster, but Smith will likely open 2017 at Triple-A with the hope of returning to his 2015 levels of success with High-A San Jose (2.35 ERA, 0.84 WHIP) after a disappointing campaign split between the Giants and Padres organizations in 2016.

Smith was recalled from Double-A San Antonio on Wednesday.
EDGE Analysis
It's the first career call-up for Smith, who was claimed off waivers from San Francisco back in July and subsequently sent to Double-A. The 26-year-old has allowed just three hits and one earned run across 5.2 innings at San Antonio, an improvement, albeit over a small sample size, over the ugly 7.08 ERA he posted in 22 appearances for Double-A Richmond as a member of the Giants organization earlier in the season.

Smith was claimed off waivers by the Padres on Wednesday.
EDGE Analysis
Smith was subsequently optioned to Double-A San Antonio and has not played above the Double-A level yet during his five-year professional career. During the 2016 season with the Giants' Double-A club, he has posted a 7.08 ERA with a 1.97 WHIP during 20.1 innings of work.

The Giants will designate Smith for assignment Thursday, Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smith was added to the Giants' 40-man roster in November after an electric 2015 campaign in which he notched a 2.35 ERA to go with a .84 WHIP. However, a bump up to Double-A has affected him this season as he's been lit up for a 7.08 ERA across 20.1 innings. He'll now be subject to waivers, but given his struggles at Double-A, it's possible that he goes unclaimed and ends up being outrighted back onto the Double-A Roster.
