McCarthy returned to the lineup after getting a breather Friday against left-hander Blake Snell and had two of Arizona's five hits. The Diamondbacks' offense has dried up on their current homestand, with Saturday's shutout being the third in six games at Chase Field. McCarthy, however, remains as consistent as he's been all second half. He's 6-for-19 during the homestand and batting .339 since the break.

McCarthy's off day comes against lefty Blake Snell, but it isn't necessarily a sign that he's now stuck in a platoon, as he'd started against each of the last eight southpaws the Diamondbacks faced. He's been on fire lately, hitting .366/.416/.606 with four homers and eight steals in his last 18 games, but it will be Daulton Varsho who starts in right field Friday.

McCarthy went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and was caught stealing in Wednesday's 5-3 extra-inning win over the Dodgers.

McCarthy nearly ended the game in the bottom of the ninth with an attempted steal of home, but reliever Evan Phillips nailed him on a close play. It was just the second time in 20 attempts McCarthy's been caught this year. A spare piece at the start of the season, McCarthy's played his way into a regular role with an .889 OPS in the second half and appears headed for an everyday job in 2023. The outfield will be crowded next season with Corbin Carroll, Daulton Varsho and Alek Thomas in the mix, but the left-handed hitting McCarthy could become the designated hitter -- as he was Wednesday -- either every day or most days against right-handers.

McCarthy went 4-for-6 with a triple, three RBI, a run scored and a stolen base in a 12-6 victory over the Rockies on Saturday.

McCarthy tallied hits in four consecutive at-bats and stole second base in a highly productive start from the number three spot in the lineup. McCarthy punctuated the performance with an RBI triple in the ninth inning. It was his third triple of the season. McCarthy is now slashing an excellent .305/.365/.484 in 80 games played. The 25-year-old has a an enviable success rate on the basepaths as well, having stolen 17 bases in 18 attempts.

McCarthy singled and stole second base in the fourth inning and walked before swiping another bag in the ninth. The latter theft helped produce a run, as McCarthy reached third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly. McCarthy has been a big help in the stolen-base department since returning from a stint in the minors July 11, recording 13 thefts on 14 attempts. He's also batting .322 with five home runs and 26 RBI over 44 games during that span.
