New York Mets pitcher Steven Matz will make his second rehab start Thursday for High-A St. Lucie while recovering from a strained lat muscle, according to New York Newsday. Matz has been progressing toward a return after being placed on the disabled list in early July, as he threw one inning and gave up a run in his first appearance since the injury Saturday. Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said he expects Matz to return to the big club before the end of the season. "We'd like to get Steven Matz back on or around the first of September," Alderson told NJ.com earlier this month. "Somewhere in that range. If that happens then it's possible to go back to a six-man rotation. So there's some other things where we may end up with a spot start or two in August so there are some things that we can do that will help manage those innings."
