Owen is expected to open the season at Triple-A Indianapolis, where he should play on a near-everyday basis. The 28-year-old made his big-league debut in 2021, going hitless across five plate appearances with Pittsburgh before he was outrighted off the 40-man roster last May.

Owen passed through waivers unclaimed after being designated for assignment Tuesday, which is hardly a surprise given that he's a 27-year-old with just five MLB plate appearances under his belt. He'll remain as organizational depth for the Pirates for now.

EDGE Analysis
The 27-year-old started in right field in his big-league debut Wednesday and went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts before being hit by a pitch. Owen will be evaluated further Thursday during the scheduled off day.
