The Angels released Dozier on Sunday.

Dozier saw big-league action with the Royals in each of the past six seasons and was a regular in the lineup for a significant portion of his run with Kansas City, but after producing a career-worst .558 OPS in 2023, he had to settle for a minor-league deal with the Angels in free agency this winter. The 32-year-old fell short in his battle for a spot on the Opening Day roster and had done little at Triple-A Salt Lake to make a case for a call-up, as he slashed just .222/.268/.394 with a 29.9 percent strikeout rate over 214 plate appearances. Dozier's track record in the majors could be enough for him to get a look with another organization on a minor-league deal, but given his age and recent form at Triple-A, a return to the big leagues wouldn't seem to be in the forecast anytime soon.

The Angels reassigned Dozier to minor-league camp Thursday.

Dozier signed a minor-league deal with the Angels in January after logging a .558 OPS across 91 plate appearances in his final season with the Royals. He looked better this spring, going 4-for-19 with a home run and three RBI, but the Angels will keep him in the minors until he proves he can maintain consistent success at the plate. Dozier will likely begin the season at Triple-A Salt Lake.

Dozier signed a minor-league contract with the Angels on Thursday that includes an invitation to spring training, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports.

Dozier was released by the Royals last May following a dreadful start at the plate and never caught on with another team. Kansas City still owes him $9.25 million in 2024, but the Angels would be on the hook for only the veteran minimum if he makes the team. Dozier has slashed just .222/.286/.384 over 301 games since the start of the 2021 season. If he does manage to crack the Halos' Opening Day roster, it would likely be as a reserve.

Dozier refused his assignment to Triple-A Omaha and was officially let go Saturday. He is now free to sign with whatever team he likes, though his .183/.253/.305 slash line and 31.9 percent strikeout rate over 82 at-bats this season are rather unappealing.

Dozier was designated for assignment by the Royals on Monday.

Dozier is making $7.5 million in 2023 and is owed more than $10 million beyond this season, but the Royals have opted to turn the page on a guy who no longer was in their future plans. The 31-year-old has just a .558 OPS this season and a .679 OPS since the start of the 2020 campaign. He will be released after clearing waivers.

Dozier went 1-for-3 with a solo homer, two RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's loss to the Brewers.

EDGE Analysis

Dozier's big hit of the day came in the ninth inning when he took Eric Lauer deep to left center. Sunday was his second homer of the year and his first since April 10. He does have five hits over his last four games but is slashing just .197/.271/.329 with nine RBI, eight runs and an 8:27 BB:K over 85 plate appearances this season.

Dozier went 2-for-2 with a triple, a double, two walks and two RBI in Friday's 12-8 loss to the Athletics.

Dozier's strong game Friday doubled his total of extra-base hits for the season -- he now has four through 23 contests. He snapped an 0-for-10 skid at the plate. The veteran utility man is slashing .185/.254/.292 with a home run, seven RBI, six runs scored and a pair of stolen bases over 71 plate appearances.

Dozier notched a stolen base as a pinch runner in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Twins.

EDGE Analysis

Dozier isn't exactly a premium source of speed, but he was able to get himself into scoring position after replacing Salvador Perez in the eighth inning. It was Dozier's second steal of the season. The utility man is slashing .172/.226/.241 with a home run, five RBI and six runs scored over 62 plate appearances.

Dozier is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks.

EDGE Analysis

Dozier started in right field in the first two games of the series in Arizona, but he'll head to the bench Wednesday while Jackie Bradley gets a turn in the outfield. MJ Melendez -- who is serving as the Royals' designated hitter Wednesday -- should eventually settle back into a role in the corner outfield, but Dozier may still have a path to seeing playing time at third base if his performance warrants it.
