Rodriguez pitched a scoreless inning in Tuesday's loss to the Angels without allowing a hit or a walk.

The outing was nice, but it was also the first time K-Rod appeared in more than a week. He also had eight days between his last outing and the one before that. Manager Brad Ausmus previously said Rodriguez was regaining some of his trust, but it also doesn't look like the manager is in much of a rush to use the veteran reliever these days. Justin Wilson should have a fairly firm hold on the closer role, while Rodriguez doesn't appear like a fantasy option at this point.

Rodriguez is regaining some of manager Brad Ausmus's trust and he could work his way back into high-leverage situations, Ryan Zuke of MLive.com reports.

Rodriguez tossed scoreless innings on Friday and Sunday in Texas, and while that's a small sample size, it's better than some of his previous results. "I would like to get him back in the (late-inning) mix, probably," Ausmus said. "If he can keep having outings like this, it makes it a lot easier to have a deeper bullpen." Justin Wilson has been outstanding as Detroit's closer, so K-Rod might be hard pressed to wrestle that role back. But he could be looking at some more holds and possibly vulture some wins if he pitches later in close games.

Rodriguez (1-5) was tagged with the loss in Tuesday's 13-inning game against the Orioles. He allowed two earned runs in an inning of work on two hits and a walk.

Rodriguez entered in the top of the 13th with the game tied 11-11. He promptly allowed a leadoff double to Mark Trumbo and then a home run to Chris Davis. Rodriguez really can't be trusted at this point, but the Tigers had little choice after burning through five relievers in the first 12 innings. At this point, the veteran reliever does not look close to regaining the closer role.

As big of news as this is, it doesn't as much of a surprise. Simply put, Rodriguez hasn't been good this year. He's blown 4-of-11 save opportunities (including two straight) and owns a brutal 8.49 ERA through 11.2 innings (13 appearances). Justin Wilson will take over as closer for the time being, though manager Brad Ausmus left the door open to K-Rod returning to that role should he return to form. Wilson owns a 1.32 ERA and has collected eight holds through 13.2 innings this season.

Rodriguez (1-4) blew a save opportunity in Sunday's loss to the Athletics. He retired just one batter, and allowed three runs (all earned) on two hits and a walk.

Rodriguez opened the ninth inning by allowing a walk and a double to instantly get in trouble. He got Khris Davis to line out, but then Ryon Healy went deep for the walk-off win. With four blown saves and a 8.49 ERA, Rodriguez may be on thin ice as Detroit's closer. The team could turn to Justin Wilson if Rodriguez gets bumped from the role.

Rodriguez worked around a hit and a walk with one strikeout to record his seventh save of the season in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Indians.

Rodriguez got the first two batters he faced before allowing a double and a walk to bring the tying run to the plate. He then came through by getting Francisco Lindor to pop out to end the game, easing any tension that he may have built. Though he completed the save, Rodriguez continued an unnerving trend of frequently putting men on base this season, raising his WHIP to 1.68. He did receive a recent vote of confidence from Brad Ausmus, however, and should keep his hold on the closer's job if he continues to get the job done.

Rodriguez threw a perfect inning in a non-save situation in Sunday's win over the White Sox. He struck out two.

EDGE Analysis

It's been a rough go for Rodriguez, as he entered Sunday having allowed an earned run in three straight appearances and six out of nine outings this year. He should have a pretty long leash in the closer's role, and Sunday's outing is a step in the right direction, but fantasy owners will want to see him string together a few more good outings before they feel too comfortable.

The Tigers aren't expected remove Rodriguez from the closer job in the near future, if they consider it at all this year, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports.

EDGE Analysis

It may not necessarily be a strong endorsement of Rodriguez's remaining skills, but more of a realization that they don't really have an option behind him in the bullpen chain with which they'd feel comfortable. Manager Brad Ausmus did acknowledge that "at some point, he does have to pitch the way he pitched last year, because he did an outstanding job for us last year and in a city that has been looking for a closer that was consistent for a long time, he was that." The reliever crew behind K-Rod would likely dictate a committee situation led by left-hander Justin Wilson, but Joe Jimenez, whom may consider the future of this position for Detroit, may get a shot down the road if Rodriguez continues to throw junk.

Rodriguez came on in the top of the ninth inning with the game tied 1-1, and he struck out Nelson Cruz to start the frame. But then a Kyle Seager double and Ben Gamel single pushed across the go-ahead run. Rodriguez's ERA is up to 6.23, and he's looking like a very shaky closer option at the moment.
