Felipe Lopez is expected to play in China this season. It was reported Tuesday that Lopez had signed with the Bridgeport Bluefish of the independent Atlantic League, but the team announced Wednesday that he's pursuing an opportunity in China. The 33-year-old infielder hasn't played professionally since 2011.

Brewers sent INF Felipe Lopez outright to Triple-A Nashville. Lopez was designated for assignment on Sunday after posting an ugly .182/.245/.182 slash line over 44 at-bats. The veteran infielder drew no interest on waivers.

Brewers designated INF Felipe Lopez for assignment. Everyone's least favorite utility man slashed an abysmal .182/.245/.182 over 44 at-bats with the Brew Crew. He may rejoin the team in September if he clears waivers, but will play primarily off the bench.

Brewers purchased the contract of INF Felipe Lopez from Triple-A Nashville. The Brew Crew originally were going to keep Lopez at Triple-A for a while and let him earn his way up, but they've reversed course. With Rickie Weeks out for at least a couple weeks and Craig Counsell in the midst of an embarrassing slump, Lopez will get a shot at some playing time at second base.

Brewers GM Doug Melvin said the newly acquired Felipe Lopez will report to Triple-A Nashville initially but could be brought up soon. "We want to think about what we want to do," Melvin said. "With a day game (Thursday), we haven't had time to sit down with (manager) Ron (Roenicke) and discuss all of our options. This gives us some depth in the infield. We could still bring him up." Melvin added that the Brewers will "mix and match and hope somebody gets hot" at second base while Rickie Weeks is out. He did not eliminate the possibility of making another trade, but the market is pretty grim. Craig Counsell, Josh Wilson and Eric Farris are the current options at the position.

Brewers acquired INF Felipe Lopez from the Rays for cash considerations. The Brewers might not be done shopping for infielders, but Lopez certainly represents an upgrade over Craig Counsell. The 31-year-old batted just .216 with two homers and eight RBI over 102 plate appearances with the Rays this season, but hit .320/.407/.448 with three homers and 35 RBI over 66 games down the stretch with the Brewers back in 2009. He'll hope for similar success this time around.
