Giants designated LHP Eric Surkamp for assignment. The move was made in order to clear room on the 40-man roster for the arrival of Michael Morse. Surkamp, 26, hasn't fared well in his seven starts at the big league level, but he boasts a career 2.84 ERA with 541 strikeouts over 484 2/3 minor league frames. Someone figures to scoop him up on waivers.

Eric Surkamp was greeted rudely in his first start in the majors this season, getting rocked for seven runs over 2 2/3 innings in a loss to the Reds. He gave up nine hits, including two homers, and failed to strike out a batter. In fairness to Surkamp, he had just 36 minor league innings under his belt since Tommy John surgery and probably wasn't ready for a call to the majors. He'll be sent back down.

Eric Surkamp will be recalled to start one of the games of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Reds. Surkamp has missed most of this season while coming back from Tommy John surgery. He's pitched pretty well since returning last month, though, posting a 4.00 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 33/12 K/BB ratio over 36 innings. He shouldn't be used in fantasy leagues.

Giants activated LHP Eric Surkamp from the 60-day disabled list; optioned him to Triple-A Fresno. Surkamp, making his way back from Tommy John surgery, posted a 2.93 ERA and a 17/3 K/BB ratio in 15 1/3 innings over five rehab starts with High-A San Jose. He'll serve as rotation depth at Triple-A for now and could be an option for a call-up during the second half.
