Fryer was claimed off waivers by the Pirates on Sunday, Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish reports.

Fryer's addition is the product of a deep need at catcher for the Pirates. Opening Day starter Francisco Cervelli is currently on the DL with a hand injury, and current starter Chris Stewart is at risk of landing on the DL with multiple lower leg ailments. Erik Kratz is the only healthy catcher on the active roster, so Fryer will give Pittsburgh another organizational option outside of Jacob Stallings if Stewart ends up landing on the DL.

Fryer was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
