Pagan entered in the ninth inning with Cincinnati up 3-2. He battled for a seven-pitch strikeout of Seiya Suzuki, then fanned Carson Kelly on six pitches before getting Willi Castro to ground out to end the game. Pagan had given up four runs (three earned) over his previous three appearances, so this was a much-needed smooth outing for him. The veteran righty almost blew a three-run lead, allowing the first three batters to reach base and watching two of them come around to score before Pagan got Jurickson Profar to ground out and end the game. Pagan threw 10 of 13 pitches for strikes and made quick work of the Rays' 2-3-4 hitters to close out the 2-1 victory. It was his seventh straight scoreless appearance, and he's allowed just two runs over 18.2 frames (0.96 ERA ) since the start of June. The 34-year-old righty established a new career high in saves, surpassing the 20 he collected in 2019 -- the only other time he's even reached double digits in his big-league career. Pagan is doing his best to improve his trade value as the deadline approaches, and over his last 10 appearances he's posted a 0.96 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 9:3 K:BB in 9.1 innings while converting all four of his save chances.

Pagan made quick work of Colorado in the final frame, needing only 14 pitches to retire the side in order and lock down his 20th save of the season.
