Smyly allowed seven earned runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out four across five innings Wednesday against the Mariners. He did not factor into the decision.
EDGE Analysis
Smyly followed Jose Leclerc into the game, beginning his outing in the second inning. However, he was still hit hard, surrendering two home runs -- both two-run shots -- and three other extra-base hits. Smyly has struggled regardless of when he's entered contests this season, racking up a 6.98 ERA and 1.76 WHIP with 39 strikeouts and 28 walks across 38.2 innings. He'll get a better matchup in his next scheduled outing, currently slated for Tuesday against Baltimore.

Smyly will serve as the Rangers' primary pitcher behind opener Jose Leclerc in Wednesday's game against the Mariners, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
EDGE Analysis
Manager Chris Woodward is hopeful that deploying a righty (Leclerc) in front of a southpaw (Smyly) will help neutralize a Mariners lineup that ranks 11th in wRC+ (105) versus left-handed pitching this season. Smyly has made only one previous appearance as a primary pitcher, which came May 11 in Houston. In that outing, he served up five runs (four earned) on four hits and four walks over 4.2 innings.

Smyly (1-3) lasted six innings Friday against the Angels, allowing three runs on five hits and four walks while striking out four to pick up the win.
EDGE Analysis
Smyly turned in a quality start with a season-long six innings to pick up his first win since 2016. The left-hander, who missed two years due to Tommy John surgery, proved he still has something to offer on the mound, hurling a quality start at Angel Stadium. He'll look to continue improving his 6.15 ERA and 1.69 WHIP against the Mariners on Wednesday.

Smyly allowed two runs on three hits with four strikeouts and four walks across four innings during a no-decision against the Cardinals on Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
The lefty has experienced control issues all season, and while he did only allow two runs, that was true again in this one. With his four walks, Smyly raised his BB/9 to an astonishing 6.5. Of course, that's not his only problem, as he also owns a 2.0 HR/9 and 5.96 FIP. Overall, Smyly is 0-3 with a 6.51 ERA, 1.73 WHIP and 31 strikeouts in 27.2 innings this year. He will next look to finally get his first win against the Angels on Saturday.

Manager Chris Woodward confirmed Smyly (ankle) would make his next start Sunday against the Cardinals, Robert Falkoff of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Initially lined up to start Friday in the series opener, Smyly will be pushed back a couple days to afford him more time to recover from the left ankle sprain he sustained in his previous outing last weekend against the Astros. Smyly was deployed behind an opener in that contest, but he's slated to work in a more traditional starting role in his return to the mound.

Smyly (ankle) could have his next scheduled start pushed back a day or two, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smyly is tentatively scheduled to start Friday against the Cardinals, though that could change due to a minor ankle sprain he's currently nursing. It doesn't sound like the issue is serious enough to force him onto the injured list, though the Rangers may play it safe and give the left-hander some extra rest before his next outing to ensure the injury doesn't linger. Should Smyly have his start pushed back, Ariel Jurado is a candidate to get the ball Friday.

Smyly will serve as a traditional starter when he pitches Friday at home against the Cardinals, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Rangers used reliever Jesse Chavez as an opener for Smyly the last time out, but he was unable to get through five innings (4.2 IP, 96 pitches). He's made it through five innings just once in six outings while averaging 20.9 pitches per inning. That's the highest average of the 179 pitchers who began Sunday with at least 20 innings of work.

Smyly (0-3) took the loss Saturday, giving up five runs (four earned) on four hits and four walks over 4.2 innings while striking out three as the Rangers were routed 11-4 by the Astros.
EDGE Analysis
After Jesse Chavez worked a clean first inning as the opener, Smyly checked in and held down the fort for two more frames before Houston's offense got rolling. The southpaw threw only 54 of 96 pitches for strikes, and he'll take a 6.85 ERA and 27:16 K:BB through 23.2 innings into his next outing -- whether as the starter or primary pitcher behind an opener -- at home against the Cards on Friday.

Smyly will serve as the primary pitcher Saturday against the Astros and is expected to enter the game in the second inning, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
EDGE Analysis
As expected, Smyly won't start Saturday's contest, but he's still in line to handle the bulk of the innings. He could still factor into the decision despite coming out of the bullpen.

Smyly, the projected starter Saturday against the Astros, may be used as the primary pitcher after an opener begins the game, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.
EDGE Analysis
Manager Chris Woodward is considering having Kyle Dowdy or Ariel Jurado, both right-handers, serve as the opener against Houston's right handed-heavy lineup, and then bring the left-handed Smyly into the game. Jurado was a starter in the minors but hasn't thrown more than two innings since April 21. Dowdy has pitched multiple relief innings for the Rangers but is not stretched out as a starter. Neither is expected to go five innings, so Smyly could be in line for a decision.
